This role is hybrid and requires you to be at our / client office at a minimum of 5 days per month- subject to change at any time.

We are looking for a seasoned Azure Data Solution Designer to join a leading banking client in Toronto. In this role, you will lead the design of robust, scalable, data-intensive applications and platforms on the Azure data ecosystem, including batch and near-real-time processing. You will work closely with business SMEs, enterprise and solution architects, data engineers, QA teams, and cloud infrastructure teams to define end-to-end solutions across data ingestion, processing, storage and consumption layers.

This position requires strong hands-on familiarity with the Azure data stack, excellent communication skills, and the ability to guide engineering teams through design execution. You will ensure that your designs meet financial-industry-grade non-functional requirements such as performance, scalability, observability, security, resilience, and cost optimization.

Your future duties and responsibilities

• Collaborate with business SMEs, product owners and architects to understand business processes and transform requirements into application and integration designs on the Azure data platform.
• Define end-to-end solution designs for ingestion, processing, storage, and consumption layers leveraging Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks/Spark, Azure Data Factory and Synapse.
• Produce and maintain critical design artifacts, including high-level and low-level solution design documents, component and integration diagrams, data/process flow diagrams, and interface contracts.
• Design source-to-target (S2T) mapping for data and control flows, ensuring business processes map clearly to technical components and operational jobs.
• Work closely with data engineering teams to ensure designs translate correctly into Databricks jobs, ADF pipelines, error handling, scheduling and operational components.
• Ensure all designs meet non-functional requirements including performance SLAs, scalability, resilience, recoverability, monitoring/alerting, governance, security and compliance.
• Partner with cloud/platform teams on environment setup, identity and access, networking, and security required to support design implementation.
• Review implementation details (code, pipelines, Spark jobs, configurations) to confirm alignment with design, standards and best practices.
• Support SIT/UAT phases by clarifying design intent, defining test scenarios, and assisting with defect triage and issue resolution.
• Contribute to design standards, reusable patterns, frameworks and shared components for the Azure data platform.

Required qualifications to be successful in this role

o Significant experience (7+ years) in solution or application design for data-intensive platforms (batch and near-real-time).
o Hands-on experience with Azure Data Lake, Azure Databricks/Spark, Azure Data Factory/Synapse.
o Strong understanding of ETL/ELT, API integration, messaging/event-driven patterns, and file-based ingestion.
o Experience designing end-to-end data flows across landing, curated and consumption layers in cloud data platforms.
o Proficiency in SQL, PySpark and Spark for collaborating with engineering teams and reviewing technical implementations.
o Strong understanding of performance, scalability, observability, reliability, security and cloud cost optimization.
o Familiarity with Azure security (IAM, MSI, Key Vault, RBAC, network isolation, data masking).
o Experience with modernization and migration initiatives (on-premises to Azure, ETL re-platforming).
o Strong leadership capabilities and ability to guide small development teams.
o Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

• Preferred Qualifications

o Azure certifications (Solutions Architect, Data Engineer, Fundamentals).
o Financial-services or banking industry experience.
o Exposure to Data Mesh concepts, data product design or event-driven architectures.
o Experience with cloud cost management, monitoring/observability and large-scale data platform operations.
o Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or related field.
