Job Information
The Senior Technical Officer, Code Compliance applies knowledge and experience in guiding and assessing construction projects to ensure compliance with national model codes and standards adopted by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT). Working with architects, engineers, developers, other GNWT departments, municipal officials, and fire inspectors/investigators; the position plays a vital role in ensuring life and fire safety objectives of the Office of the Fire Marshal are adequately achieved throughout the NWT.
Reporting to the NWT Fire Marshal, the Senior Technical Officer, Code Compliance assesses approximately 100 projects annually, which involves several activities including: preliminary evaluation, research and analysis, and a comprehensive review of final architectural and engineering drawings and specifications. Key components that receive close scrutiny include architecture, structure, mechanical, electrical, automatic sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, emergency power systems, emergency lighting systems, specialized process operation (e.g. fueling facilities), and evacuation plans, including certification for life safety systems.
Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by: a Bachelor Degree in Engineering or Architecture plus 8 years of relevant experience; OR Diploma in Engineering or Architectural Technology plus 10 years of relevant experience; including 3 years of direct experience in plan review/examination, code interpretation and compliance.
