The opportunity:

The University of Manitoba is seeking an Accounting Assistant to join our Supplier Payment Services team. In this role, you will support the processing of non-salary payments to suppliers, contractors, government bodies, and external organizations. A key part of your work will focus on capital and construction project payments, ensuring compliance with Prompt Payment Legislation and University policies.

You will help ensure invoices are valid, accurate, and paid on time, minimizing interest or penalties while maximizing available discounts. This position plays an important role in supporting efficient, timely, and compliant payment processes across the University.

The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

  • Completion of a formal training program in accounting or business administration from a recognized institution required.
  • Three years of directly-related experience in a computerized accounts payable environment required.
  • Must be proficient in Accounting, have experience in preparing Journal Vouchers, reconciling accounts and understanding of data feeds to General Ledger.
  • Must have a solid understanding of accounting principles such as those necessary in order to prepare journal entries to clear balance sheet accounts or assess PST/GST using either a debit or credit memo.
  • Must have experience with accounting for GST and PST (including self-assessments).
  • Good knowledge of university policy and procedures would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of University Computer Systems and experience with Banner/Epic would be an asset.
  • Accounts Payable Experience in a large and complex ERP environment would be an asset.
  • Experience with capital and construction projects would be an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience with retail taxes, withholding taxes for non-residents and self-assessment would be an asset.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Proficiency in using advanced features of Excel is required. The use of advance Excel features such as pivot tables, macros, vlookups, sumifs, and nestedif statements is an asset.
  • Must be skilled in the use of a personal computer and desktop software Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Windows).
  • Must have excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize.
  • Must have the ability to manage heavy workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must have the ability to work quickly calmly under pressure to prioritize and organize workload effectively and efficiently.
  • Must have the ability to process large numbers of documents with speed, accuracy and attention to detail in order to meet strict deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide excellent customer service and work effectively with all levels of staff and public in a diplomatic, firm but tactful manner is required.
  • Maintain good professional working relationships with all internal and external customers and all departments at University of Manitoba.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment is required..
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.
