Applications are invited for the position of Greenhouse Technician in the School of Environmental and Horticultural Studies, located at the Daniel J. Paterson Campus. The starting hourly rate is $34.60 (Pay Band G - $34.60-$39.93) for a 35-hour work week. Additional hours may be required as necessary. This is an Appendix D, temporary position as per Article 17.3.1 of the Support Staff Collective Agreement and is set to commence in April 2026 and will conclude in October 2027. It may be subject to an extension by mutual agreement of the parties.

Reporting to the Manager of Greenhouse Operations, this role is responsible for a wide range of tasks related to greenhouse and nursery operations. The Greenhouse Technician will play a vital role in supporting academic delivery and maintaining crop health and productivity for academic and retail activities. The responsibilities include greenhouse up-keep, crop scheduling, and implementing Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies.

###Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in the delivery of horticulture labs by supplying and maintaining the tools, equipment and plant materials required as per instructor’s request
  • Ensures that tools, equipment and materials needed for the lab are prepared, operational and meet safety standards
  • Assist in food production for academic demonstration, retail sales and supply produce to the kitchens at the DJP campus
  • Assist in growing, scheduling, and overseeing ornamental crops for academic demonstration, retail sales and grounds operations for the DJP campus
  • Overseeing crop protection through integrated pest management (IPM) and safe spraying of pesticides
  • Oversee retail operations under the supervision of the Manager of Greenhouse Operations
  • Assist the horticulture team in training, scheduling and leading student technicians in the greenhouse and on the grounds
  • Support events and engagements hosted by the Niagara College community

###Qualifications:

  • Minimum two (2) year diploma in Horticulture, Greenhouse or related field of study
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in the horticultural industry, specifically in greenhouse retail or greenhouse production
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with health and safety protocols and standard operating procedures

###Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pesticide License or Ministry of the Environment Exterminators license
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Chainsaw and skid steer certificates
