Job Summary & Requirements RVH Adult Mental Health is a Schedule 1 Designated Psychiatric Facility. The 36 bed Acute Care Adult Inpatient Unit has an emphasis on the Recovery Model, short term assessment, stabilization and treatment. The unit includes a secure Extra Care Area with 5 beds for patients requiring close monitoring and support. An additional 5 bed Emergency Mental Health Suite is available 24 hours a day with services that include risk assessment, crisis intervention, consultation and referrals for patients experiencing acute mental health crisis. The Social Worker participates as an integral member of the multidisciplinary health care team and must have strong interpersonal skills including a demonstrated ability to work independently and in a collaborative team setting in a fast-paced environment. The Social Worker must demonstrate strong written and oral communication skills and complete accurate and timely documentation which meets both professional college and organization standards. Sound knowledge of community resources and supports with inter-agency collaboration is required.
Education:
- Masters of Social Work degree from an accredited School of Social Work
- Registration and in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers
Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Providing individual counselling
- Providing health teaching and education
- Facilitation of psychoeducational groups
- Utilizing crisis intervention techniques as required
- Completing referrals to community partners and identifying transition destinations
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure continuity of patient care
- Acting as liaison between patients and community partners, ensuring the patient is connected with the appropriate community agencies prior to time of discharge
- Completing appropriate documentation as required
- Other duties as assigned
Experience:
- 3-7 years of current, progressive clinical experience in the treatment of those with a serious mental illness, addiction, and/or concurrent disorder
- Developed skills in individual and group therapy
- Non-violent crisis intervention training
- Strong knowledge and clinical skills in various treatment modalities including CBT, DBT, solution focused therapy, family therapy, motivational interviewing,
- Knowledge of the Recovery Model of Care is considered an asset
- Identify and assess mental illness and concurrent disorders, and domestic violence awareness
- Development of treatment plans in collaboration with the patient and support system
- Assessment and treatment planning experience
- Risk Assessment experience
- Developing treatment plans in collaboration with the patient, their family and the interprofessional team
Competencies :
- Knowledge of substance abuse and major psychiatric disorders as identified in the DSM-V
- Strong written and oral communication skills and computer proficiency (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
- Group facilitation skills and experience
- Demonstrated conflict resolution and problem-solving skills
- Time management skills
- Organization skills
- Stress management skills
- Advocacy skills
- Working knowledge of diagnostic assessments and tools used in the Mental Health field i.e. Beck Depression Scale, PHQ-9 and GAD 7.
- Ability to make decisions regarding patient care both independently and as a part of the interprofessional team
- Networking skills to engage resources both within and outside the organization
- Ability to work independently and as part of an interprofessional team
- Compliance with confidentiality requirements
- Demonstration of commitment to continuous quality improvement

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, located in Barrie, Ontario, provides safe, high-quality care for residents across a large geographical region including Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. The area is home to more than 450,000 residents, with half of RVH’s patients living outside the City of Barrie.
As the largest health centre in North Simcoe Muskoka, RVH provides highly specialized services, and technology not found anywhere else in the region. This includes the only interventional radiology suites for minimally invasive surgeries, vascular services, advanced stroke care, as well as dedicated trauma rooms in its large Emergency department. RVH is also home to the Hudson Regional Cancer Centre, Simcoe Muskoka Regional Heart Program, Simcoe Muskoka Regional Child and Youth Program and the RVH Regional Renal Program meaning distance is no longer a factor for residents receiving lifesaving treatment.
