Position Overview Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Boulevards Maintenance Operator 2 within the Operations department. The successful candidate will have a focus on quality customer service and continuous improvement processes. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City’s Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Vision for an inclusive, connected and prosperous city.

Key Duties And Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in the development, maintenance and operation of the Operations Department related to concrete and boulevard activities and winter control

  • Operate various types of equipment including but not limited to front-end loaders, dump trucks, large plate tampers and small equipment, including auxiliary attachments in a safe and efficient manner

  • Perform various duties specific to concrete infrastructure maintenance activities including but not limited to:

  • interpret construction drawings

  • concrete base preparation

  • determine and set grades according to existing infrastructure or construction plans

  • Set forms for sidewalks, stairs, retaining walls, etc.

  • determine material quantities required

  • Perform advanced finishing techniques such as stamped or exposed aggregate

  • Additional duties include restoration/repair of City owned boulevards.

  • Perform various duties related to winter control of City owned sidewalks including operating a sidewalk plow and other relevant machinery, manual snow and ice clearing and manual salting and sanding application.

  • Perform other various duties relating to winter control of roadways, including operating a combination tandem truck with plow and wing and other relevant machinery

  • Comply with all applicable regulations and requirements of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, the Highway Traffic Act, all Federal, Provincial and City regulations, policies and procedures

  • Remove obstacles hazardous to employees or the public or that interfere with the safe operation of vehicles or equipment

  • Accurate and timely completion of daily activity time sheets including reporting of materials used and work completed, inspection and reporting forms

  • Report on variances in daily work plans

  • Immediately report vandalism, mechanical difficulties, damage and hazardous conditions

  • Actively participate in a team environment

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications And Requirements

  • Experience related to the duties listed above normally acquired through a grade 12 education and 2 years experience performing work related to boulevard maintenance activities, specifically focusing on concrete installation and finishing including 1 year experience operating DZ vehicles, and other relevant equipment such as tractors or tools commonly used for subgrade preparation and concrete finishing in a safe and efficient manner in live traffic. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Must possess a Class DZ licence with a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Experience related to the duties listed above which includes 5 months of Plow and Wing experience on a DZ Class vehicle would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience, knowledge and understanding of tools, equipment and procedures relevant to concrete installation and finishing with the ability to interpret construction drawings, determine appropriate grades and material quantities required
  • Completion of Ontario Good Roads - TJ Mahony Road School and Ontario Good Roads Winter Patroller or equivalent training would be considered an asset
  • Must be a reliable self-starter, able to make decisions and function with minimum supervision.
  • Must possess good oral and written communication skills
  • Have the ability to deal with the public in a cordial manner and work well in a team environment
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical activities including lifting, digging, shoveling, raking and climbing ladders and be able to actively participate in daily activities, working within live traffic conditions and adverse weather conditions
  • Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft office, data bases and GIS are considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act

Hours of work 40 hours per week. Any eight (8) consecutive hours between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm, Monday through Thursday and between 7:00 am and 4:00 pm on Fridays. Winter Control and standby/on-call may be a requirement of this position.
