Job Description The Payroll Officer/Manager sits within the HR function, reporting to the Director of People, and is responsible for the end-to-end management of the organisation’s payroll operations. The role oversees the accurate and timely processing of monthly payroll, statutory returns, pensions, and salary variations, while ensuring compliance with tax, NI, and regulatory requirements.
The Payroll Officer/Manager works closely with both HR and Finance departments, providing administrative, financial, and personnel support, maintaining payroll systems and records, and liaising with auditors and external bodies. The position also includes handling employee pay queries and documentation, contributing to financial reporting and year-end processes, and ensuring data accuracy, confidentiality, and continuous improvement of payroll systems and procedures.
The ideal candidate will be well-educated with a recognised CIPP qualification and substantial end-to-end payroll experience gained within a complex organisation. They will possess a strong understanding of pay and grading structures and how these operate in practice. The successful applicant will be confident using payroll software packages, demonstrate advanced Excel capability and solid Microsoft Office skills, and be able to work accurately to tight deadlines. Experience of payroll or finance within a school or educational environment would be advantageous.

Essential Criteria
- Good standard of general education
- CIPP Qualification
- Significant experience processing payroll from start to end within a complex organisation.
- Good understanding of a variety of pay and grading systems and their practical application within a payroll context.
- Good understanding of the practical application of technology within a finance department
- Experience of using payroll software packages.
- Advanced user Excel skills.
- Intermediate user skills in the Microsoft office suite
- Demonstrable ability to work to tight deadlines.
- Able to develop a high level of understanding of systems and processes quickly.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience of payroll/finance in a school or other educational environment.
- Basic project management experience, ideally in payroll software implementation.
