About the role

Purpose:
The Office of Institutional Planning and Analysis (OIPA) is responsible for providing Business Intelligence (BI) deliverables to support decision making and planning at York University. OIPA coordinates the collection of data needed for responses to internal and external requests for information, and provides historical, current, and predictive views of York's operations with the intention of improving institutional performance.OIPA is involved in several projects including (i) accountability reporting, (ii) support to strategic planning, (iii) enrolment projections, including enrolment analysis, monitoring, and internal reporting, (iv) faculty analysis and internal reporting, (v) student and graduate surveys, (vi) external statistical reporting to government agencies and rankings, (vii) market research and foresight analysis, and (viii) data strategy and governance.The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst reports to Director Integrated Resource Planning (Director) and is responsible for fulfilling the reporting needs of OIPA and its campus partners. This position is instrumental in planning and implementing new BI projects and objectives. As a technical and professional lead, the Senior Business Intelligence Analyst leads programs and projects that are significant in scope and have university-wide impact. The role provides leadership on outcomes that affect the university community, including students, staff, and academic and administrative units across multiple faculties and departments, by shaping how institutional data is understood and applied in planning and decision-making, and by ensuring that results are both reliable and aligned with the university's long-term goals. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst works collaboratively as part of OIPA, working closely with the directors and senior management, and is accountable for managing and supporting the data and reporting needs of the Office and its partners. This role bridges technical data expertise with institutional planning, ensuring that insights drawn from data directly inform decisions across academic and administrative units. The position models, reviews and analyzes data from internal and external sources, designs and develops reports and interactive dashboards, communicates analysis results and makes recommendations to senior management, and develops and implements data quality rules and protocols. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst also conducts research, synthesizes findings, and shares best practice processes to develop go-forward plans and future state reporting options. This role is expected to demonstrate thought leadership, champion automation and data governance best practices, and ensure that BI tools and metrics evolve to meet York's strategic and operational goals. The Senior Business Intelligence Analyst ensures that all BI deliverables are developed in alignment with York's Data and Analytics Strategy and OIPA's Business Intelligence Framework, which establishes consistent data standards, promotes responsible data stewardship, and supports scalable reporting solutions, and ensures compliance with university data governance, privacy and security requirements.

Education:
Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, such as Data Science.

Experience:
Five years of related experience, in a balanced business/technical environment with a developed technical background.
Experience working in a large, complex organization, working with various levels of leadership.

Skills:
Business Intelligence knowledge: experience leading business intelligence projects and advanced knowledge of business intelligence tools (e.g., Power BI & Tableau).
Data management knowledge: experience with data migration and ETL tools, data warehouses, data mining (including SQL, SAS) and various databases (e.g., MySQL, Oracle, MS Access etc.).
Expert knowledge of principles across data science, business analysis, information management, and higher education planning frameworks, with ability to integrate these perspectives in BI solution design.
Expertise in business analysis, information management and process modelling with demonstrated analytical, process re-engineering, problem solving, negotiation and communication skills.
Proficiency in qualitative and quantitative data analytics, data visualization, and data reporting.
Ability to synthesize information and create meaningful reports from raw data and with the ability to effectively communicate insights from a dataset using narratives and visualizations.
Advanced understanding of data modeling and data warehousing concepts.
Advanced attention to detail. Ability to evaluate and resolve data quality issues and perform reasonability check analytical results.
Effective oral presentation and written communication skills.
Effective organizational, problem-solving, and critical thinking abilities.

Advanced proficiency with BI tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
Advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint (including DAX queries.
Experience with Azure technology stack preferred.
Experience with statistical languages such as R, Python, STATA, SAS.Proficiency in Structured Query Language (SQL).

  • Compensation:

York's CPM Compensation Framework has a salary grid consisting of 6 or 8 steps (depending on job grade) which is reviewed annually with possible adjustments, and a lump sum Performance Based Recognition Award.
