Health Care Assistant (HCA) - On-call/ Casual

Classification: Band 3 — Skilled Trades / Technical Reports To: Community Care Nurse (RN) Location: Hitacu, British Columbia and within Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ community settings Employment Type: Casual / oncall Salary Band: Band 3 ($51,074 – $76,611 · $26.19 – $39.29/hr) POSITION PURPOSE The Health Care Assistant (HCA) provides frontline, hands-on support to community members, assisting with daily living, personal care, and overall well-being. Working under the guidance of a Registered Nurse, the HCA plays a critical role in supporting Elders, individuals with chronic conditions, and those requiring additional care to remain safely in their homes and connected to their community. This role is relationship-focused and community-based, requiring a compassionate, respectful, and culturally safe approach to care.
ACCOUNTABILITY Personal Care & Daily Living Support Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting, and oral hygiene. Support mobility, including transfers, walking, and use of mobility aids or mechanical lifts. Assist with positioning and comfort to ensure safety and dignity. Assist with meal preparation, feeding, hydration, and light housekeeping related to client care. Clinical Support & Observation Assist with basic clinical tasks under the supervision of the Community Care Nurse (RN). Take and record vital signs as directed; provide medication reminders within scope. Support implementation of care plans developed by the nursing team. Monitor and report changes in clients' physical, emotional, or mental health promptly. Emotional Support & Community Engagement Provide companionship and emotional support to reduce isolation and promote well-being. Build trusting relationships with clients and families. Support clients in maintaining connections to community, culture, and daily routines. Participate in community-based programs and initiatives where appropriate. Documentation, Compliance & Cultural Safety Maintain clear, accurate, and timely documentation as required. Deliver care in a culturally safe, respectful, and trauma-informed manner. Support clients in remaining connected to their culture, traditions, and community. Work collaboratively with the broader health and community services team.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE Required: Health Care Assistant Certificate or equivalent recognized training Registration with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry (or eligibility to register) Valid First Aid/CPR certification Valid Class 5 Driver's License and ability to travel within the community Preferred: Previous experience in home care, community care, or working with Elders Experience working with Indigenous communities CORE COMPETENCIES Empathy and cultural sensitivity Community engagement and outreach Crisis intervention and support Confidentiality and professional boundaries Collaboration and teamwork Adaptability and resilience WORKING CONDITIONS Mix of office, community centre, and home visit settings Flexible availability including evenings and weekends Emotionally demanding work requiring strong self-care practices May involve responding to community emergencies CULTURAL REQUIREMENTS Respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ healing traditions and cultural practices Understanding of intergenerational impacts and culturally safe care Willingness to participate in cultural training and community events

Also a member of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ Government continues to promote education and community programs that enhance Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ and Nuu-chah-nulth identity. “The Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ asserts that we have exercised sovereign authority over our lands since time immemorial. Despite the arrival of settlers on our lands the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ has preserved and protected our traditional territories and we accept the obligations and responsibilities inherent in governing.
