About the role

Purpose Reporting to the Patient Care Manager of the Emergency Department the Quality Assurance Nurse will play a pivotal role in safeguarding the integrity and excellence of patient care. They will be embedded in the emergency department, serving as a dedicated resource to oversee and guide the implementation of multiple project initiatives. This nurse possesses a blend of clinical acumen and systems thinking, with a clear understanding of patient flow and care in the Emergency Department. They meticulously review patient records, monitor adherence to protocols, and investigate incidents to uncover root causes and prevent future errors or system bottlenecks in the department. They have an understanding of hospital metrics, what they are, why they matter and what it takes to improve them. By collaborating with physicians, nurses, and hospital leadership, they foster a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and evidence-based practice. Ultimately, their mission is to enhance patient outcomes, reduce risks, and ensure that the emergency department delivers care that is consistently safe, effective and timely during a time of operational change.

Duties

  • Effectively use the Standards of Nursing Practice and the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
  • Compliant with legislation, and organizational and departmental policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Maintain commitment to self-growth and professional development by remaining current in knowledge and application of best practice through the utilization of appropriate research and literature.
  • Support the Virtual Home Waiting Room project, attend meetings and address concerns.
  • Participate and collaborate with other health care providers in the provision of patient care.
  • Develop and lead quality improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in ongoing quality improvement and risk management activities.
  • Participate in monthly ED Quality Meeting and ED Governance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse Certificate of Competency in Ontario.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) competency
  • ACLS and PALS
  • CTAS

Experience

  • Minimum of three years recent Emergency Department experience
  • Project Management experience
  • Experience with HIS (health informatics system) Meditech project implementation

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge and understanding of the standards of practice of the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Knowledge of patient care requirements and specialized equipment as appropriate to the clinical area.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated clinical competency in the management of care of patients in emergency.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office software.
  • Familiarity with data collection tools, EMR system, and quality metrics.
  • Experience in staff, patient and family education and program development.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently as a team member in a fast-paced environment in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrate good interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to maintain successful working relationships with the interdisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes.
  • Ability to organize time effectively to perform the duties of the position.

Sault Area Hospital (SAH) is a state-of-the-art facility that opened on March 6, 2011. SAH provides primary, secondary and select tertiary services to a total catchment population of approximately 115,000 residents in Sault Ste. Marie and the District of Algoma. In addition to providing core services in Emergency and Critical Care; Medicine; Surgery; Obstetrics, Maternity and Pediatrics; Mental Health and Addictions; Complex Continuing Care; and Rehabilitation, SAH is also home to the Algoma Regional Renal Program and the Algoma District Cancer Program. With the opening of the new integrated, one-site hospital in March 2011 also came the first-ever satellite radiation treatment suite in the province.
