About the role

The Department of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 10 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

The community partner research assistant will bring their living experience of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (e.g., person, family, or caregiving) to help share the design, interpretation, and community relevance of ongoing research. The role emphasizes partnership, knowledge sharing, and supporting projects that aim to reduce stigma, improve health outcomes, and build resilience across the lifespan.

The work will be based at the University of Calgary (main campus), The Child Development Centre (Alberta Children's Hospital), with some virtual and community-based activities. Given the nature of the research, some flexibility in the research assistant's schedule will be required as research participants may occasionally be booked during the evenings or weekends. This position reports to the Principal Investigator.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Share perspectives and experiences to help ensure research reflects the realities of individuals and families living with FASD.
  • Provide feedback on study design, recruitment materials, and knowledge translation products (e.g., community presentations, infographics, social media etc).
  • Support study recruitment for adults and children with FASD through community networks, outreach, and input into accessible recruitment strategies.
  • Assist with community outreach and engagement activities, including attending events and supporting awareness initiatives.
  • Supports strategic outreach and participant recruitment through community networks.
  • Provides input on accessibility and stigma reduction in research materials.
  • Assists with onboarding and promotes inclusive, trauma-informed practices.
  • Influences research relevance and community impact.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Living experience with FASD (personal, family, and caregiving).
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working in a collaborative environment.
  • Interest in research, advocacy, and/or community engagement.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and participate in training.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and share experiences in a respectful way.
