Access Services within UVic Libraries is seeking an enthusiastic and engaging staff member to contribute to our team. Our large team prioritizes values of equity, diversity, inclusion, and decolonization, and center these values in providing customer service to all library users. In addition to providing front-line customer service, this role will assist with Technical Support Unit specific tasks including online daily cash reconciliations, room and event set-up/take-downs, and other project support as needed.

Access Services and Resource Sharing is part of the University of Victoria Libraries and consists of: Circulation Services, Music & Media, the Technical Support Unit, Stack Maintenance, Distance Learning & Research, and ReQuest for Faculty. The Libraries are made up of approximately 150 employees including Faculty Librarians, professional and CUPE staff, and student assistants. The UVic Libraries support the teaching, research, and learning needs of our campus and the broader communities.
Reporting to an assigned Access Services Supervisor, the Library Circulation Assistant I supports UVic Libraries' values and objectives by contributing to a strong and diverse staff team dedicated to providing excellent customer service to Library users at multiple services points across UVic Libraries Within Access Services, the Library Circulation Assistant I acts as a point of contact in providing customer service to all library users and acts as a resource for a diverse staff team dedicated to service excellence.. The position assists users with access to materials, resources and services, processes materials, troubleshoots equipment and software issues, supports collection maintenance, and performs other duties of similar scope and complexity. In addition, the Library Circulation Assistant I provides operational support for library staff and helps problem-solve or trouble-shoot issues before escalating to a supervisor. In completing their duties, the Library Circulation Assistant I works with a variety of specialized equipment, software, databases, and citation systems, and performs other duties of similar scope and complexity.
This position requires the ability to move items approximately 10 kgs (22 lbs.) throughout the building and accessing materials at various heights. This position may be required to work varied day, evening and weekend shifts.
Job Requirements
Experience:
This position requires a minimum level of education, training, and experience equivalent to 2 years of experience working within a comparable environment.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and tailor communication style for different audiences.
- Experience composing various business communications such as emails, memos, and reports.
- Proficiency with computer applications (MS Office suite, web tools, Excel, databases).
- Demonstrated experience in providing excellent public/customer service.
- Ability to prioritize and manage time and tasks with attention to detail.
- Ability to problem solve by using judgement, independent thinking and/or analysis.
- Ability to interpret policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated flexibility in a responsive work environment that allows for changes in priorities.
- Experience in maintaining confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to work effectively independently or within a team.
- Ability to conduct basic research as directed.
- Ability to learn, troubleshoot, and instruct users in the use of equipment and software.
- Familiarity with UVic programs, policies, procedures, and library systems is considered an asset.
Specialized Knowledge/Education:
Secondary school diploma or equivalent. Some post-secondary education is preferred.
