Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related study area, including laboratory analysis techniques.

OR

  • Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with one year’s = directly related experience.

OR

  • High school completion with job-related options with a minimum of four years = directly related experience.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with multiplex immunofluorescence is required.

  • Experience in the processing and preparation of samples for immunological detection of antigens in cells and tissues is required.

  • Experience in regular immunofluorescent imaging techniques, three-dimensional imaging techniques and morphometric image analysis are required.

  • Experience in operating and maintaining high-performance immunofluorescence imaging instruments is required.

  • Experience in performing immunostaining techniques on cells and tissues is required.

  • Experience in the use of small animal anesthesia equipment and preparation of small animals for and use of bioluminescence imaging equipment is required.

  • Experience in the collection, fixation, and preparation of cells and tissues for histological and immunostaining analysis is required.

  • Previous experience in animal work and basic handling of experimental mice is required.

  • Experience using bright fields and fluorescent microscopy techniques is required.

  • Experience using a paraffin microtome is required.

  • Basic Cell culture and aseptic technique is required.

  • Experience with histological staining techniques is required.

  • Detailed knowledge of tissue histology and the ability to identify specific tissues by their histological appearance is required.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs and advanced microscope user interface software is required.

  • Accurate pipetting and other laboratory measuring techniques are required.

  • Experience handling toxic and hazardous agents is required.

  • Wl-IMIS Certification is required.

  • Minimum 3 years directly related experience in a laboratory setting is preferred.

  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Proficient in paraffin tissue processing, embedding, sectioning and staining and related paraffin equipment (tissue processor, embedding station, microtome) is required.

  • Has practical experience in multiplex immunofluorescence on tissues is required.

  • Is proficient using advanced imaging processing software for multiplexing and quantification of images is required.

  • Familiar with different histological tissue staining methods, most importantly Hematoxylin & Eosin histology, is required.

  • Superior and effective communication skills are required.

  • Ability to collaborate with others of various levels of expertise is required.

  • Exceptionally well organized and keep proper records is required.

  • A satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required

OTHER JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous teaching experience is an asset.
  • Knowledge of University of Manitoba systems and processes is an asset.

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Processes and prepares samples for immunological detection of antigens in cells and tissues.
  • Assists in in-situ hybridization techniques on tissues and cells.
  • Handles and prepares human and animal tissues for histological and irnmunocyto-/histochemical/ in-situ hybridization procedures.
  • Performs immunostaining techniques on cells and tissues.
  • Assists in procedures on experimental animals including injections, blood sampling, dissection, anaesthetizing.
  • Prepares small animals for and uses of bioluminescence imaging equipment.
  • Assists in orthotopic stereotactic tumor cell grafting into brain procedures on experimental mice.
  • Assists in orthotopic laser interstitial thermal treatment (LITT) in experimental mice.
  • Assists in procedures on experimental animals including injections, blood sampling, dissection, anaesthetizing.
  • Prepares and conducts a variety of assays (e.g., cytotoxicity, ELISA, apoptosis, signaling, gene reporter assays, migration assays).
  • Performs protein analysis, including Western blotting, immunoprecipitation and preparation of samples for mass spectrometry.
  • Conducts cell culture work and can genetically alter by means of chemical and viral procedures primary and established human and animal eukaryotic cells.
  • Ensure supplies/media/antibodies etc. are maintained at an adequate level and records of this are kept and accessible.
  • Assist in ordering reagents/equipment for the research laboratory.
  • Routinely cleans glassware, instruments and equipment and does basic service and maintenance work on laboratory equipment, including balances, spectrophotometer, and centrifuges.
  • Ensure that lab safety measures are followed in the laboratory.
  • Computes data and designs plots for publications using a variety of statistical software programs, does library searches and assists in the preparation of posters for scientific presentations.
  • Be responsible for keeping abreast of new procedures, techniques, and technologies. Maintains up-to-date filing system on current protocols, manuals, catalogues and literature.
  • Responsible for upholding a timely, effective, and documented report.
  • Maintains daily records of completed work in a lab book.
  • Provides basic training in histochemical/immunohistological techniques to other lab personnel.
  • Keeps records on past, present, and ongoing service work and regularly informs the Pl.
  • Participates in the preparation of public presentations by the PI.
  • Keeps current records of all chemicals and other lab supplies.
  • Keeps abreast of new procedures, techniques, and technology. Maintains current files of manuals, catalogues, and literature of related equipment. Undertakes research and conducts experiments to solve specific or unusual problems.
  • Comply with lab safety regulations.
  • May be required to perform related duties not exceeding skills and capabilities as required.
