Job Summary
The incumbent will conduct research at the University of British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (UBC BC CDC) in the evaluation and analysis of the current wastewater surveillance program. This work is to support efforts by the UBC CDC to assess the reach and impact of the provincial wastewater surveillance program between 2020-2025. They will perform rigorous analysis of the provincial wastewater surveillance program (e.g., types of activities, definitions of engagement, outcomes and impacts) and quantitative analysis (e.g., trends in wastewater signal, sensitivity and specificity), report and presentation on findings of the above and design and implement impact evaluation of wastewater surveillance program
Organizational Status
The incumbent will report directly to the Principal Investigators of the research study and will interact and work closely with research staff, UBC CDC employees, Provincial Health Service Authority employees and other internal and external stakeholders. Daily work will be in collaboration with and supervision of Drs. Aidan Nikiforuk (Research Associate) and David McVea (Primary Investigator).
Work Performed
- Perform research and analysis, specifically analyzing data on reach, impact, effectiveness, and characteristics of the wastewater surveillance program.
- Leads the design, implementation, and interpretation of qualitative data from interviews, a survey instrument(s) and focus groups.
- Aids in developing and implementing the work plan to evaluate the effectiveness of the wastewater surveillance program on the metrics of timeliness, representation, user engagement, impact, sensitivity and specificity.
- Assist the primary investigators and research team in implementing and completing project grant deliverables by means of written reports, short summaries and presentation.
- Support planning for potential engagements and project completion with various stakeholders, data users, and partners.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Errors made could influence the ability of researchers and staff to meet critical deadlines, as well as compromise the results of research projects, and therefore impact the credibility of the research team. Errors in performance of the above-related duties could have a significant impact on the effectiveness, image, reputation and financial status of the Principal Investigator, the department, and the university.
Supervision Received
Works with considerable latitude. Research work reviewed against achievement of project objectives. Research facilitation activities are reviewed for conformity to established objectives and standards.
Supervision Given
May manage junior researchers, research assistants and technicians, junior staff or students.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- MSc., MPH or similar degree in epidemiology (preferred).
- Postgraduate or working professional
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills; experience translating data into recommendations and policy.
- Data input and experience working with Excel or alternative database software.
- Experience collecting, inputting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative datasets. Familiarity with qualitative approaches and analysis, including surveys, discourse analysis, focus groups and interviews.
- Strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to exercise high level of tact and discretion.
- Data integration and dataset design experience.
- Experience in visual analytics an asset.
- Experience working with R or other statistical software an asset.
- Proficiency with NVivo or other qualitative software.
- Demonstrated understanding and/or appreciation of the principles and practices of wastewater surveillance.
- Experience collating data about complex organizational programs.
- Experience with institutional and/or program evaluation and assessment.
- Knowledge of UBC BC CDC funding programs and partnerships.
