THE ROLE
The Accounting Manager is a strategic finance leader who oversees the integrity, accuracy, and efficiency of all accounting operations while proactively driving initiatives that enhance financial performance and decision-making. This role not only leads the day-to-day accounting team and manages the financial close process but also champions continuous improvement in systems, controls, and reporting to strengthen organizational effectiveness and support long-term business goals.
Reports to: Director of Accounting & Reporting
RESPONSIBILITIES
Financial Accounting & Reporting
- Oversee and manage all accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and payroll.
- Review and approve monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for accuracy, compliance with GAAP, internal policies, CRA requirements, and Ministry reporting.
- Exercise signing and approval authority for journal entries, reconciliations, and financial statements within established limits.
- Ensure all reconciliations, journal entries, and accruals are completed and reviewed on time.
- Manage multi-entity consolidation and intercompany transactions.
- Maintain accounting schedules and lead month-end and year-end close processes across all homes and entities.
- Act as the primary liaison with CRA for tax-related inquiries, compliance, and reporting requirements.
BUDGETING & FORECASTING
- Lead the preparation of annual budgets and rolling forecasts in collaboration with operations and leadership.
- Review and analyze monthly budget variances; provide actionable insights and recommendations.
- Partner with home leaders to interpret results, support financial decision-making, and guide resource allocation.
INTERNAL CONTROLS, COMPLIANCE & RISK MANAGEMENT
- Establish, monitor, and continuously improve effective internal control systems to safeguard assets and ensure accurate reporting.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards, internal policies, CRA regulations, and other external regulatory requirements.
- Identify financial and operational risks and implement mitigation strategies.
- Serve as main contact for external auditors, coordinating year-end audits and supporting documentation.
- Manage and review tax filings, payroll remittances, and regulatory reporting, ensuring CRA compliance.
TREASURY & CASH FLOW MANAGEMENT
- Monitor and manage cash flow, including transfers, loan payments, and debt covenant compliance.
- Support treasury strategy, banking relationship management, and capital allocation decisions.
SYSTEMS, PROCESS IMPROVEMNET & REPORTING
- Lead ERP optimization and process automation initiatives to improve accuracy and efficiency.
- Leverage financial and operational data to provide actionable insights and support evidence-based decisions.
- Develop and maintain standardized dashboards, KPIs, and financial reports for leadership.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance reporting timeliness and data quality.
LEADERSHIP & TEAM DEVELOPMENT
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff; set goals, review performance, and build team capabilities.
- Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
- Provide technical guidance on complex accounting matters and serve as a trusted resource for the team.
BUSINESS PARTNERING & STRATEGIC SUPPORT
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, HR, and Development to support strategic business initiatives.
- Communicate financial performance to senior leadership and operational teams, influencing business decisions through analysis and recommendations.
- Participate in special projects, financing initiatives, and due diligence for acquisitions or new developments, and long-term strategic planning.
- Lead and support organizational change initiatives that impact finance processes, systems, or operations.
As peopleCare continues to grow, additional responsibilities may be assigned to support evolving business needs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- CPA designation required.
- 5–8 years of progressive accounting experience, including minimum 1 year of supervisory/direct report responsibility.
- Strong understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and multi-entity accounting.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Advanced proficiency with Excel, ERP systems, and financial reporting tools.
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
