About the role
The Building Operations Branch in the Assets and Project Management Department is currently accepting applications for Custodial Office Cleaner - Student positions. Most Students will be required for the period of May through August, with April 15th being the earliest start date and September 15th being the latest release date.
All applicants must be available to start work on short notice and intend on returning to school at the end of season.
The Custodial - Office Cleaner Student works under the general supervision of the Foreman Grade 3. The incumbent is responsible for cleaning of civic buildings, furnishing and fixtures; minor ground maintenance work; any building operations duties, such as locking and unlocking doors; and passive security duties to keep civic buildings in a clean, sanitary and safe condition.
As the Custodial Office Cleaner - Student, you will:
- Cleaning of civic buildings, furnishings and fixtures.
- Cleaning of washrooms.
- Minor grounds maintenance work and building operations duties.
- Perform other duties consistent with the classification as assigned.
Your education and qualifications include:

Grade 10 or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Six (6) months prior experience in an Office Cleaner / Custodial position in facilities such as office buildings, hospitals, schools or similar work environment.

Experience in the application of cleaning products.

Ability to use commercial cleaning products and equipment.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Ability to deal with employees and general public in a professional and respectful manner.

Organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks within tight timelines.

Verbal communication skills with ability to understand and execute instructions.

Written communication skills with the ability to complete documents such as logs and reports clearly and concisely.

Must possess and maintain a St. John’s Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate or equivalent OR have the ability to obtain it within three (3) months.

IMPORTANT: Applicants who have been educated outside of Canada must have education which is comparable to the minimum qualification in Canada. Applicants submitting foreign credentials require an official academic assessment report issued by a recognized Canadian assessment service https://www.canalliance.org/en/ at application.
Conditions of employment:
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- A Police Information Check (with Vulnerable Sector) and Child Abuse Registry Check satisfactory to the employer will be required from the successful candidates, at their expense.
- Must obtain and maintain a Winnipeg Police Service Level 2 or 3 security clearance, depending on work location.
- Must be able to work shift work.
- Must be able to move locations per Management direction based on operational needs.
- Must be physically capable of performing all of the duties of the position, in all weather conditions.
- The successful applicant(s) will be required to provide CSA-approved personal protective safety boots (six (6) inches above the ankle) at their own expense.
