Wildlife Programs Coordinator

Location: 11821 123 St NW, Edmonton, AB, T5L 0G7

Closing Date: Until Suitable Candidate Found

Position Status: Full-time (40 hours/week), Temporary (until March 1, 2027)

Reporting to the Environmental Monitoring Manager, the Wildlife Programs Coordinator will be required to work on the Environmental Monitoring Team to deliver the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Environment and Climate Change (ECC) department’s projects and initiatives. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, developing, and implementing programs aimed at addressing Otipemisiwak Métis Government citizen wildlife related concerns and will support efforts to design and undertake environmental initiatives and programs. The ideal candidate will have experience working with Indigenous communities and organizing community-based monitoring, and an understanding of wildlife conservation in Alberta.

This is a great opportunity to contribute to meaningful, community-driven environmental work that reflects Métis priorities and traditional knowledge. The successful candidate will support the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s efforts to implement and undertake environmental initiatives and programs aimed at fulfilling the ECC department’s following pillars:

  • Reducing impacts on the environment

  • Community driven involvement

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation of new and existing community-based monitoring programs that integrates Métis Traditional Knowledge and engages Métis Citizens.

  • Support community engagement activities to provide education and awareness and/or to obtain citizen input and feedback on environmental issues, including those related to wildlife in Alberta.

  • Collect and report on data from surveys, field work, and community engagements through reports, presentations, community meetings, and social media.

  • Participate in meetings, committees, and technical working groups to provide technical expertise.

  • Develop and maintain constructive working relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, including Elders, Knowledge Holders, Citizens, Leadership, Government, staff, and community partners.

  • Maintain awareness of government policies and programs related to wildlife in Alberta, including providing updates to senior management and making recommendations as to actionable steps to be taken to best meet the needs of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

  • Support Environment and Climate Change project field activities, including environmental monitoring, site visits, and community events.

  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Skills & Competencies

  • Knowledge of wildlife management principles and practices such as wildlife allocation, wildlife habitat assessment, wildlife disease, population monitoring, and non-game management.

  • Working knowledge of legislation related to wildlife management in Alberta (e.g., Alberta Wildlife Act, Public Lands Act, Migratory Bird Convention Act, Species at Risk Act).

  • Knowledge of Alberta Hunting and Trapping Regulations and the Métis Harvesting Policy is an asset.

  • Recognized strength in supporting teams and providing administrative and clerical support to add to organizational capacity.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (including Word, Excel, and SharePoint).

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette.

  • Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to organize and prioritize daily tasks and long-term objectives.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong working relationships.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills.

  • Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities.

  • Ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.

  • Political and cultural sensitivity.

  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Wildlife Sciences, Conservation, Ecology, or a related field.

  • A related degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

  • Minimum of two (2) years of related work experience is required.

  • Experience interpreting wildlife management legislation in Alberta (e.g., Alberta Wildlife Act, Public Lands Act, Migratory Bird Convention Act, Species at Risk Act) is an asset.

  • Experience with ArcGIS Online platform and associated products (e.g., Story Maps, Collector, Survey 123, Field Maps) is an asset.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work regular office hours of Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, as well as occasional evenings and weekends, as required.

  • Requirement to work in-office in Edmonton, Alberta.

  • Ability to travel throughout Alberta, if given notice.

  • Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

  • Ability, or willingness to learn, to operate equipment including but not limited to: 4X4 trucks and trailers.
