Position Summary
Physician Assistant, Emergency
The ED Physician Assistant role is a position within the Emergency Department (ED) with the primary focus on collaborative management of patients in the Fast Track area of the ED. Embracing models of operational and clinical excellence, patient and family centred care, the ED Physician Assistant works under the direct supervision and/or delegation of a supervising Physician of Emergency Medicine and in partnership with the interdisciplinary Emergency Department Team. You will provide high quality care in a rapid and high turnover area of the Emergency Department. You will function as a professional who works independently and interdependently supporting the healthcare team. You are highly organized, able to succeed in a fast paced and high-volume client-facing environment and are eager to engage in new challenges every day. You also have well developed interpersonal, critical think and problem-solving skills and can work effectively independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team. You have excellent verbal and written communication, teaching and clinical expertise. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families.
On a practical level, you will
- Conduct patient interviews and take medical histories
- Perform physical examinations and interpret findings
- Organizing laboratory and diagnostic investigations
- Initiation of treatment including but not limited to pharmaceuticals, wound care, epistaxis management, incision and drainage, suturing and casting under medical directives as delegated by a physician
- Perform controlled acts under medical directives delegated to you by a physician
- Counsel patients on preventative health care
- Organize patient follow-up
- Perform other duties within your competencies as a Physician Assistant
Qualifications
- Graduate of a Bachelor of Science Physician Assistant Degree (BScPA) or equivalent Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program
- Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) preferred
- Physician Assistant regulation through the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
- Certified or eligible to be certified through the Physician Assistant's Certification Council (PACC)
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS),
- Experience working in an Emergency Department preferred
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and with respect in both a verbal and written format with patients, public, colleagues and other health disciplines.
- Demonstrated competency to perform complete and appropriate clinical assessment and development of a treatment plan in accordance with medical directives
- Proven problem solving and critical thinking skills
- Ability to work in a collaborative medical model of care with all members of the health care team.
- Satisfactory employment and attendance record
