The Company: Postmedia is a Canadian news media company representing more than 110 brands across multiple print, online and mobile platforms. Award-winning journalists and innovative product development teams bring engaging content to millions of people every week, whenever and wherever they want it.

This exceptional content, reach and scope offer advertisers and marketers compelling solutions to effectively reach target audiences. We are always on the lookout for talented individuals to join our team.

The Opportunity

Working remotely in London with others in The London Free Press newsroom, the ideal candidate is a graduating journalism student or recent graduate, able to meet the twin demands of speed and quality as a multi-media journalist and move up a fast learning curve. An enterprising self-starter and team player, you have a sense for stories that resonate with London’s diverse readership. The candidate must work to tight deadlines, in clear, concise writing that engages readers, covering a wide range of news, entertainment and other subjects. A key asset is the ability to use digital tools to break and develop stories and ideas. The reporting term is for three months ending in late August, working a five-day week that includes partial weekend and stat holiday shifts.

What you’ll do:

  • Report and write stories – and be able to shoot photos for them – for print, web and mobile audiences, and tailor content to meet those platforms’ varying needs.
  • Have and develop local story ideas daily, a job essential along with the flexibility to quickly pivot to other newsroom priorities to meet changing needs.
  • Use social media and other digital tools to find out what’s breaking and what Londoners in real time are talking about and which quickly needs our attention.
  • Cultivate sources to break stories and help set the news agenda.
  • File video clips for digital platforms; work with digital teams to create interactive content and other multimedia elements that both engage and enrich readers.

Who you are:

  • A graduating journalism school student or graduate, or a candidate from a related field. Newsroom experience is an asset, but you have the ability to quickly layer and prioritize what needs to be done to quickly move up the job learning curve.
  • Flexible to write effectively in breaking news, features and short form, a job essential, along with non-traditional story formats such as explainers and Q/As
  • Hungry to make the most of a chance to work in a daily newsroom with top-notch journalists and eager to show what you can do to help the room.
  • A digger, not satisfied with pat answers; always looking for hidden story angles and with a talent, or developing one, for explanatory journalism.
  • A reporter interested not just in what happened or is happening, but also why and how, with the ability to concisely convey that added meaning to readers.
  • Experience and strength in video or podcast presentation is an asset.
  • A valid driver’s licence and access to a personal vehicle are also assets.

Compensation:

  • This is a unionized position with a weekly pay rate of $917.

Applications:

  • Interested applicants should apply without delay, including a resume, covering letter explaining why the job should be for them and samples of their work.

We thank in advance all applicants for their interest, however only those candidates under consideration will be contacted. Only candidates legally eligible to work in Canada will be considered. No phone calls or agencies please.
