Responsibilities:

  • Perform specimen sorting which includes receiving, accessioning, distributing, organizing, and maintaining pre-analytical stability of specimens. This included retrieving and receiving specimens from the OR
  • Specimen accessioning, sorting, set up and preparation for grossing in accordance with Histology protocol
  • Utilization of a Histology tracking system (ie. Cerebro) to input specimen information
  • Referred out specimen packing, including result data entry – Preliminary Unverified
  • Inventory control including assessment, receiving, storage and supply management
  • Perform daily and weekly maintenance on tissue processor, stainer, embedding centre, cover-slipper, slide-writer, cassette printer and other equipment
  • Filing and retrieving specimens, blocks and slides in designated laboratory areas
  • Assist Technologists with general duties within the scope of a Laboratory Assistant III including, but not limited to, reagent preparation, set up of minor tests, signing out caseloads, etc.
  • Dumping of xylene, alcohol, DAB and other chemicals in a flammable storage room
  • General housekeeping including daily, weekly and monthly laboratory tasks in all areas.

Qualifications:

  • Graduate of Laboratory Assistant course, preferably with certification by the OSMT (with the prerequisite of an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma).
  • Must have a minimum of three (3) years recent or current experience in Histology.
  • High level of organizational and time management skills; and excellent written and verbal observational and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to meet all physical requirements of the job including, but not limited to, lifting heavy reagents and supplies, etc.
  • Must be able to work days and as required shifts.
  • Demonstrated reliable attendance, punctuality, availability and performance required.
