Elk Island Public Schools Central Services building is located in Sherwood Park, at 683 Wye Road. Providing services for the Division, Central Services is comprised of eight departments, in addition to the Board of Trustees. The departments include Education Executive, Communication Services, Facility Services, Student Transportation, Human Resources, Financial Services, Supports for Students and Information Technologies.
Reporting to the Executive Director, Division Supports, the Director of Student Transportation provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and management of all student transportation services for Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS).
The Director oversees a complex transportation system that serves EIPS students and those from several surrounding school divisions. The role is responsible for regulatory compliance, risk management, contract negotiations, budget administration, routing optimization, and stakeholder communication. The position leads transportation staff, manages contracted operators, and ensures all transportation operations align with Board policy, provincial legislation, and Alberta Education requirements

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Transportation
Operations & Management
-
Plan, organize, direct, control, and evaluate
all aspects of the transportation department including overseeing daily
operations to ensure all buses operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance
with legislation.

Provide strategic direction and set
departmental goals aligned with Division priorities.
-
Manage contracted service providers to ensure
high‑quality, safe, and efficient service including the selection and
onboarding of contractors for new routes.
-
Provide vision, mentorship and accountability
for department staff, promoting a respectful, inclusive, and safety-focused
workplace.
-
Champion professional growth, succession
planning, and workforce-capacity development within Student Transportation,
ensuring effective systems are in place for staff performance evaluation and
continuous improvement.

Communicate cancellations and service changes
to parents, schools, contractors, and stakeholders.
-
Respond to parent, school, and public inquiries
regarding transportation services if escalated.
-
Ensure transportation safety requirements are
met for EIPS, EICS, and New Horizons students.

Assist in developing transportation policies,
administrative procedures, and operational guidelines.
-
Ensure compliance with all occupational health
and safety legislation and division requirements.
-
Report hazardous conditions to protect staff,
students, and visitors.

Oversee accident and incident management
processes.
Decision Making
& Technical Oversight
-
Manage routing software, GPS systems, and
student‑tracking technologies.
-
Oversee student transportation fee collection
and management through software systems.
-
Make decisions regarding route design, service
levels, and operational adjustments.
-
Provide recommendations for changes to EIPS
policies and procedures.

Lead contract management, performance reviews,
and renewal processes.
Project &
Financial Management
-
Prepare, oversee, and manage the transportation
department’s annual budget.
-
Monitor financial performance and ensure
alignment with division priorities.
-
Prepare and present budget reports to Senior
Administration.
-
Oversee contract negotiations and annual
reviews with service providers.
-
Complete Rural, Urban, and ECS Special Grant
funding claims in accordance with regulations.
-
Collaborate with Finance, Alberta
Transportation, and Alberta Education on projects and funding requirements.
Community Engagement
& Stakeholder Relations
-
Serve as the primary point of contact for
parents, school staff, trustees, and the public.
-
Communicate transportation practices, policies,
and operational decisions clearly and professionally.
-
Meet with parents, school staff, bus drivers,
and trustees to review inclement‑weather procedures.
-
Cultivate and sustain strong relationships with
contractors, government authorities, and community partners.
-
Lead strategic communication with stakeholders
and the public during emergent issues, service disruptions and major
operational changes.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
-
Minimum Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in business,
transportation management or related field.
-
Preferred: Experience or training in public‑sector
administration or K–12 operations.
Experience:
-
Minimum Required: 5-7 years of student
transportation experience, including 5+ years in a formal leadership role.
-
Preferred: Experience working with senior management and/or within a school
division.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong understanding of transportation
regulations, safety standards, and provincial legislation.
-
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and
public‑speaking skills.
-
Strong analytical and problem‑solving
abilities.
-
Proficiency with routing software, GPS systems,
Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and emerging technologies.

Ability to manage multiple priorities under
stringent timelines.

Strong financial management skills, including
budgeting and cost‑control experience.

Ability to lead strategic initiatives,
technology adoption, and continuous improvement programs.
