The Opportunity McElhanney has an exciting opportunity for a Transportation Design Engineer or Technologist to join our growing Calgary team. If you’re passionate about designing safe, efficient, and community‑focused transportation infrastructure, this role offers the chance to work on impactful projects across Western Canada. You’ll collaborate with a multidisciplinary group of engineers, technologists, planners, and project managers to deliver innovative solutions for municipal, provincial, and private‑sector clients.

This position is Calgary based and offers the flexibility of remote work.
What You’ll Do
- Lead and support the design of roadways, intersections, active transportation facilities, transit corridors, and site‑access improvements.
- Prepare geometric designs including horizontal/vertical alignments, intersections, grading, drainage, and corridor models using Civil 3D.
- Complete ancillary design tasks such as signage, pavement markings, barrier, and parking designs.
- Develop design reports, cost estimates, tender packages, and construction specifications.
- Collaborate with internal teams across geomatics, transportation planning, municipal engineering, and construction services.
- Conduct design reviews to ensure accuracy, constructability, and compliance with applicable design standards.
- Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and technologists.
- Attend meetings, present design concepts, and support public engagement activities when required.
What You’ll Bring
- Degree or diploma in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
- 5 - 15+ years of experience in transportation or municipal infrastructure design.
- Registered or eligible for registration as a P.Eng. with APEGA, as C.E.T. with ASET, or equivalent.
- Proficiency with Civil 3D (required); experience with MicroStation/OpenRoads is an asset.
- Strong understanding of roadway geometric design guidelines. Familiarity with various provincial and municipal guidelines throughout Alberta and British Columbia is an asset, particularly City of Calgary and Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors.
- Excellent communication, organization, and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced, multi‑disciplinary environment.
What Can We Offer You? The salary range for this position is $82,000 - $140,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
