This position leads the design, development, and implementation of the wildland fire science program within the Province. This includes working with data to provide risk analysis, fire weather information and forecasting, developing burn restrictions, and incorporating science-based decisions into wildland fire operations. This position directly contributes to public safety, safety of wildland firefighters, protection of wildland and urban interface, and the protection of our forest within the Province.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Lead the timely and accurate analysis (and support data collection) for the Canadian Fire Weather Index calculations for PEI;
  • Act as the main point of contact for internal and external program supporters and jurisdictions (municipalities, regional governments);
  • Collaborate and communicate with coordinators from other provinces, territories, and municipal/regional/provincial-territorial authorities to plan and deliver an inclusive program;
  • Provide decision support for Manager, Director and Senior Government to support resource allocations, fire closure orders, based on wildland fire science information;
  • Generating wildland fire behavior forecasts and burn restrictions each day during the fire season;
  • Extensive use of geographic information systems for fire reporting, fire behavior, and suppression actions;
  • Review of historical weather data to locate trends and improve safety for public and wildland firefighters;
  • Maintain and update GIS data layers related to wildfire activity in accordance with CIFFC standards;
  • Data upload via FTP client software to CIFFC, which includes development of Wildfire Dashboard and API;
  • Work with the Forests, Fish and Wildlife team to provide forest fire suppression;
  • Participating in training to ensure competency when operating on a fire suppression incident;
  • Providing standby service on a scheduled basis;
  • Ability to meet physical fitness standard on an annual basis;
  • When necessary, provide mutual aid support other jurisdictions and agencies;
  • Represent the province in national aid international committees, working groups, and task teas on wildland fire science, fire weather, meteorology, and related technologies;
  • Lead daily communication of provincial burn-day status and fire weather index during fire season;
  • Advise staff on significant fire danger risks based on weather conditions and ensure timely adjustments to fire indices;
  • Validate and interpret fire weather data and indices, making necessary corrections to maintain accuracy;
  • Other duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in related post-secondary degree related to natural resources (Environmental Science, Forest Management, or similar).
  • Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of wildland fire suppression techniques, Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (including forest fuels, topography, fire weather, and use of fire modelling).
  • Completion of ICS 100, 200, and 300.
  • Experience in Wildland Fire suppression and completion of Basic Wildland Fire Suppression course.
  • Able to use information technologies (computers, mobile devices, etc.) including familiarity with presentation development tools, educations programs and media applications.
  • Experience and knowledge in GIS applications.
  • Must have valid drivers license (preference given to Class 1, 3, and 4).
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record check.
  • Experience with public speaking, presenting and engagement.
  • Strong planning, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends as required.
  • Ability to annually achieve physical fitness standard for forest fire fighters.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certificates.

Other Qualifications:

  • Masters degree in related field (Environmental Science, Forest Management, or similar) is an asset.
  • Successful completion of FireSmart training in role levels 1-3 is an asset.
  • Successful completion of Fire Behavior Specialist.
  • Knowledge of Wildland-Urban Interface and Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Behavior.
  • Knowledge of forest practices and Wildfire Mitigation Strategies.
