About Amii Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is one of Canada’s three main institutes for artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, our world-renowned researchers drive fundamental and applied research at the University of Alberta (and other academic institutions), training some of the world’s top scientific talent. About The Role The IT System Administrator ensures the seamless operation and security of our technical infrastructure, enabling our AI researchers and engineers to focus on pioneering innovations that advance the mission of 'AI for good and for all'.

Reporting to the Director, IT, the System Administrator is responsible for maintaining and optimizing our company's IT infrastructure. This includes ensuring the availability, security, and performance of all systems, managing hardware and software resources, and providing technical support to staff. The System Administrator plays a crucial position in enabling our AI teams to perform cutting-edge research and development without technical hindrances.

The position focuses on achieving excellence in three main accountabilities:

Key Responsibilities Required Skills / Expertise

  • Oversee daily operations and maintenance of the organization's servers and infrastructure environment, including monitoring system health and performance, managing user access and permissions, ensuring reliable network connectivity, and optimizing resource allocation to support organizational needs.
  • Develops and delivers training sessions and maintains comprehensive user documentation on system usage, best practices, and procedures.
  • Collaborates with internal teams and stakeholders to optimize infrastructure performance through troubleshooting, upgrades, and tuning strategies.
  • Evaluates and recommends new hardware and software solutions to enhance infrastructure capabilities and improve operational efficiency.
  • Assists in planning and executing infrastructure expansions based on organizational growth projections, maintaining capacity planning models for scalability and performance.
  • Writes and maintains technical documentation required for the setup, administration, and operation of systems, ensuring smooth knowledge transfer and continuity of operations.
  • Works with other departments to align IT initiatives with organizational goals and ensure technology supports business needs.
  • Plans, tests, and deploys system upgrades and patches, keeping servers and infrastructure updated with security and performance enhancements while coordinating maintenance to minimize downtime and user impact.
  • Monitors system logs and performance metrics to proactively identify and resolve issues, escalating as needed and coordinating with vendors and support teams.
  • Implements and maintains virtualization and containerization solutions (e.g., VMware, Docker) to optimize resource utilization and ensure secure, efficient operation.
  • Prepares regular reports on system performance, security incidents, and project status for management review.
  • Stays current on the latest technical innovations and security best practices, recommending improvements where appropriate.
  • Provides technical support to users by troubleshooting issues, assisting with access, and resolving infrastructure-related problems.
  • Manages and maintains Linux and Windows servers, ensuring high availability, performance, and security through regular updates, patches, backups, and configuration of essential network services (DNS, DHCP, NFS, SNMP, etc.).
  • Recommends and updates standard technology packages for staff, balancing job requirements, budget considerations, and the latest technology trends, and manages the deployment of tech packages for new hires.
  • Automates routine system tasks with scripts (e.g., Bash, Python) and utilizes configuration management tools to ensure system consistency and reliability.
  • Manages and administers SaaS applications such as Slack, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Google Cloud, and Adobe Creative Cloud, ensuring proper configuration, integration, and security of these platforms.

Qualifications

  • System Administration Certificate or equivalent
  • 3+ years of experience in a similar position
  • Knowledge of Mac operating system, in addition to Linux & Windows
  • Experience with various networking, routers and firewalls products
  • Experience with VMware and KVM Hypervisors
  • Experience with backup and data management solutions
  • Knowledge of Active Directory and LDAP
  • Experience with network management protocols (DHCP and DNS)
  • Knowledge of Cloud platforms (Google Suite, Microsoft 365, Slack, ManageEngine MDM)
  • Knowledge of network and system security (e.g. access management, authentication policies, and routing)
  • Able to lift up to 30+ lbs
