About the role

The Traffic Signals Electronic Technologist, under the supervision of the Senior Technologist, works mainly independently on the design, construction, installation, maintenance and manufacturing of various Traffic Signal electrical / electronic and microcomputer controllers and devices. Approximately half of the time is spent in the shop (Traffic Lab) with the remainder of time spent in the field at the various intersections throughout the city.

The Traffic Signals Electronic Technologist is required to develop a highly skilled knowledge base of the many and various, specialized equipment within the Traffic Signal industry. Equipment often has to be modified or manufactured to conform to the City’s mode of operation. A good working knowledge of electrical and electronic theory as well as that of all safety procedures is required to be able to perform such modifications, which can often occur in the field during emergency response situations.

During non-regular work hours, the Technologist may be required to provide maintenance work as First Responder, assemble, build equipment, create temporary controller timings and configurations, as well as making modifications to the control circuits and field wiring.

As the Traffic Signals Electronic Technologist you will:

  • Design, construction, installation and maintenance of various Traffic Signals equipment Provide emergency response to Traffic Signal trouble calls

Your education and qualifications include:

  • Diploma from a recognized Electronic or Electrical Engineering Technologist Program.

  • 2 years experience as an Electronic or Electrical Engineering Technologist and eligibility in CTTAM (Certified Technicians & Technologist Association of Manitoba) as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET).

  • Experience with the use of Microsoft Office software would be an asset.

  • Knowledge of solid state logic, integrated circuitry, and microprocessor technology and programming.

  • Proficiency in electronic wiring tasks, use of common hand and power tools, and familiarity with common electronic test and analysis equipment and devices for testing and troubleshooting.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow workers, other City departments, and the general public.

  • Ability to work safely with minimal supervision.

  • Strong written communication skills with the ability to understand, execute and communicate effectively.

  • Excellent verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively to staff, public, and outside agencies.

  • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to react quickly to emergency situations or rapidly changing priorities.

  • Knowledge and understanding of occupational hazards, safety precautions, regulations and procedures applicable to the area of work.

Conditions of employment:

  • The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
  • Possess and maintain valid Manitoba class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial/territorial equivalent).
  • Possess and maintain membership in CTTAM (or other provincial regulatory body) as a Certified Engineering Technologist (CET).
  • Successful applicant will be required to use a City vehicle for transportation while on City business, subject to the City Transportation Policy.
  • Physically capable of meeting the physical requirements of the position, including, but not limited to:
    • Ability to work to a height of 60 feet in an “aerial bucket and boom” mechanism.
    • Ability to work in extreme weather and/or under adverse conditions
  • Ability to acquire an appropriate Electrical Workers License (Minimum level of license would be M) - within 2 years.
