ABOUT THE ROLE

Reporting to the Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations, the Building Operator is responsible for maintaining a safe and hazard-free environment for staff and visitors of the York Region Administrative Centre and satellite offices by performing routine and unscheduled maintenance tasks on all physical plant equipment and buildings.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Performs all tasks required in the operation and maintenance of York Region buildings and equipment as directed by the Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations or Senior Building Operator.

  • Uses environmental test equipment (e.g. Digital Temp/Hum/Air velocity meters, CO2, multi-gas monitors) and supplies (e.g. water treatment chemicals) in a safe manner, according to all manufacturer’s directions. Reports any malfunctions or problems immediately to the Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations or Senior Building Operator.

  • Analyzes the specific maintenance or repair situation followed by a requisition for parts/materials according to the job needs, based on direction from the Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations or Senior Building Operator.

  • Initiates work, creates work orders and follows through to job completion. Reports any relevant conditions to the Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations or Senior Building Operator.

  • Cooperates with building tenants while performing maintenance as well as resolves any occupant related complaints in an efficient and prompt manner.

  • Monitors indoor air quality and client comfort systems in buildings to ensure maximum comfort for building occupants.

  • Performs testing and maintenance in compliance with regulations in the Ontario Fire Code, Building Code, and Canadian Electrical Code (e.g. Auxiliary Power Supply testing, Fire Alarm testing).

  • Maintains work area in a clean, hazard-free manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the policies and procedures for York Region Facilities Management.

  • Responds to internal and external enquires or concerns as required.

  • Requires travel throughout the Region operating a service vehicle and maintaining satellite offices as assigned by the Supervisor, Maintenance and Operations or Senior Building Operator when required.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Secondary School Graduation Diploma and completion of Building & Environmental Systems Level I & II or equivalent combination of education and experience in a building related trades qualification certification such as Electrician, Plumber, HVAC Technician.
  • Minimum two (2) years related maintenance experience in a building of at least 350,000 sq. ft and experience in utilizing direct digital control to operate and maintain the following equipment (air handling units, centrifugal chillers, computerized energy management lighting controls, diesel generators, gas fired hot water boilers, heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, pumps, three phase power distribution and uninterrupted power supply and related equipment.
  • Class “G” driver’s licence in good standing free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act.
  • Satisfactory completion of a Confidential Personal History Check.
  • Knowledge of all facets of building operations and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Fire Code, Building Code, Canadian Electrical Code, Occupational Health and Safety Act and other relevant legislation including “Confined space” entry procedures and relevant testing equipment.
  • Ability to demonstrate the Region’s core competencies.
  • Satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check.
