Our Ground Engineering and Tunneling team provides technical support to a wide range of infrastructure projects throughout Canada, and worldwide. As a result, we're looking for people who have the passion and drive to be involved with major tunneling and geotechnical projects across a range of sectors for various infrastructures and mining.

Position Summary As an Intermediate Tunnel Engineer for our Toronto office, you will be assigned to our tunnel projects and work as part of a team of engineers providing support and advice to the wider Jacobs business and clients as well as acting as team leader on your own projects. You will lead in the delivery of geotechnical and tunnel input to projects and will also be required to provide technical guidance and support to less experienced junior engineers.

Main Responsibilities Will Include

  • Perform a variety of engineering work from the initial planning and design through implementation and construction phase;
  • Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and designers/drafters;
  • Work as project engineer in tunnel/geotechnical projects/tasks from proposal level, to site investigation, design and construction supervision;
  • Carry out the design and specifications of various components of underground shafts and tunnel projects, including design of excavation support systems and foundations;
  • Preparing reports on feasibility studies and detailed design for components of tunnel projects;
  • Preparation of tunnel design project deliverables including technical specifications and drawings;
  • Carry out reviews of all documents and tasks related to tunnel construction and alignment;
  • Supporting project construction by reviewing submittals and design changes;
  • Provide technical input, and support to project managers and construction teams; and,
  • Mentoring and coaching junior tunnel engineers.

Here's what you'll need

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil /Geological Engineering or related;
  • Registered Professional Engineer in Ontario;
  • Minimum 5 years of all-round tunnel and geotechnical engineering experience;
  • Ability to progress schemes from inception to design completion;
  • Advanced knowledge of geotechnical engineering, including
  • Significant knowledge and experience characterizing soil and rock and groundwater sampling and understanding of sampling and testing requirements.
  • Experience in design of large diameter tunnels for transportation and water and wastewater projects.
  • Experience in design of small diameter tunnels using micro tunnelling and other trenchless methods will be considered an asset.
  • Experience in risk management, preparation of Geotechnical Baseline Reports (GBR), and quality control.
  • Knowledge and experience with ground/structural numerical methods, soil and rock. mechanics and their application in surface and underground environments and the design of tunnels.
  • Experience in geotechnical monitoring during tunnel construction, including layout of monitoring system, instrumentation, and analysis and interpretation of monitoring results.
  • Knowledge and experience designing mitigation measures for high ground water pressure for soft soil tunnel segments and in seismic active zones.
  • Knowledge and experience in underground construction techniques of tunnels by TBM, cut and cover and micro tunnelling in soft ground and rock.
  • The ability to produce accurate and well-presented reports is essential in this role;
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to work as part of a large multi-disciplinary team; and,
  • Must have flexibility to include occasional travel for assignments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science or Engineering (M.SC./M.Eng.) degree in Civil/Tunnel Engineering preferred;
  • Experience in transportation and water projects including tunnels, pipelines, outfalls, intakes and treatment plants; and,
  • Experience with geotechnical design software programs such as, Settle3D, SHAKE, FLAC and Plaxis.

Posted Salary Range Upper

115,000.00
