Senior Java Backend Developer

We are currently seeking a competent individual to fulfill the role of Senior Java Backend Developer to join our dynamic team for one of our major banking clients.
Location
Stratford / Toronto - 2 -3 days a week in office
Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced Senior Java Backend Developer to design, develop, and support scalable enterprise applications and cloud-native solutions. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in Java backend development, experience with JavaScript and .NET technologies, strong knowledge of infrastructure connectivity, hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), and familiarity with GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted development practices. The successful candidate will work closely with architects, product teams, cloud engineers, and infrastructure teams to deliver secure, high-performing, and resilient applications.
Key Responsibilities
Backend Development Design, develop, and maintain enterprise-grade backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, and Microservices Architecture. Develop RESTful APIs and event-driven applications. Optimize application performance, scalability, and reliability. Conduct code reviews and enforce development best practices. Troubleshoot complex production issues and implement long-term solutions.
Cloud & Platform Engineering
Design, deploy, and support applications on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Leverage GCP services such as Cloud Run, GKE, Pub/Sub, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, and API Gateway. Ensure cloud solutions meet security, compliance, and operational standards. Support cloud migration and modernization initiatives.
Infrastructure Connectivity
Collaborate with Infrastructure and Network teams to establish secure connectivity between applications, cloud services, and enterprise systems. Work with VPNs, Load Balancers, Firewalls, DNS, API Gateways, and network security controls. Diagnose and resolve connectivity, performance, and integration issues across environments.
Full-Stack & Integration Support
Collaborate with frontend teams working with JavaScript frameworks (React, Angular, Node.js). Develop and maintain integrations with .NET-based applications and services. Support API integrations across Java, .NET, and cloud platforms.
DevOps & AI-Assisted Development
Utilize GitHub Copilot to improve development productivity and code quality. Contribute to CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar tools. Support containerized deployments using Docker and Kubernetes. Implement automated testing and deployment practices.
Technical Leadership
Mentor junior and intermediate developers. Participate in architecture reviews and technical design sessions. Drive engineering best practices, coding standards, and innovation initiatives. Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Required Qualifications
Technical Skills 8+ years of experience in software development. Strong expertise in Java 11/17+, Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, and Microservices. Experience with JavaScript technologies (React, Angular, Node.js, or similar). Working knowledge of .NET Core/.NET Framework applications and integrations. Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Strong understanding of Infrastructure Connectivity, networking, and enterprise integrations. Experience with GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted software development tools. Proficiency in REST APIs, messaging systems, and asynchronous integration patterns. Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and containerized application deployments. Strong experience with Git, GitHub, and CI/CD pipelines. Knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with Terraform or Infrastructure as Code (IaC). GCP Professional Cloud Developer or Cloud Architect certification. Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Dynatrace, Splunk, Prometheus, or Grafana. Knowledge of Agile/Scrum methodologies.
Education
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or related discipline. Equivalent professional experience will also be considered.
