- Recruitment range: $72,242 - $79,650 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.

Job Summary
Mandate:
As part of a coordinated communications team, the Communications Officer, Research & Indigenous Initiatives, contributes specialized expertise in research communications and Indigenous-focused initiatives while supporting broader UVic Law communications priorities. This role leads content development and storytelling related to UVic Law’s research strengths and Indigenous partnerships, closely collaborating with the Law Communications Officer to ensure cohesive, culturally informed, and strategically aligned communications, media relations and institutional messaging across all UVic Law channels. This role also assists the Dean and Associate Dean, Research & Administration, in identifying, promoting, and consulting on internal and external award programs and opportunities, and supporting the identification and nomination of faculty and staff members.
Objectives:
- Develop compelling, accessible communications, including feature stories, profiles, impact summaries and digital content, that translate complex legal scholarship into engaging content and highlight the societal and community impact of UVic Law’s research and Indigenous initiatives.
- Collaborate with the Associate Dean Indigenous, Indigenous Initiatives team, and community partners to develop culturally informed communications that support Indigenous-led programs, events, and initiatives.
- Strengthen branding strategies with research units that align with UVic Law’s specific goals and identity.
- Support communications for the Indigenous Law Research Unit and Next Steps: Rebuilding Indigenous Law.
- Focuses on content-heavy, research-focused and relationship-based work that requires deep engagement with faculty researchers and partners.
- Contribute to website strategy, digital content development and high-engagement storytelling for UVic Law’s research and Indigenous initiatives, ensuring alignment with UVic Law branding.
- Support internal and external research award nominations to enhance the visibility and recognition of UVic Law’s faculty researchers and their scholarly impact
This position supports programs, initiatives and events hosted by UVic Law that may take place in the evenings or on the weekends and requires the ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
Job Requirements
This position requires a level of education, training, and experience equivalent to an undergraduate degree in public relations, communications, journalism, or a related field plus a minimum of five (5) years of communications experience. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities include:
- Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment.
- Experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating communications plans and materials for various audiences.
- Demonstrated media relations experience and the ability to develop strong relationships with news media.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing promotional plans in support of complex or multi-year projects.
- Ability to edit communications and promotional material and to adapt writing style to a variety of purposes and audiences, including taking complex research and translating into clear, succinct, compelling narratives.
- Excellent judgment and a thorough understanding of complex issues related to the university research environment, and how those issues may affect communications activities.
- Experience in developing Indigenous-focused communications and research initiatives.
- Experience writing and preparing internal and external research award nomination packages.
- Experience in website and social media management.
- Strong communication skills, with expertise in research, writing, and editing for a variety of purposes and audiences.
- Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, make decisions independently, be self-motivated and consistently meet deadlines.
- Excellent analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Experience in maintaining confidential and sensitive information.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and tailor communication style for different audiences and situations.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Understanding of the principles of design in print and multimedia materials and how to work effectively within established organizational design structures.
- Proficiency in email marketing software, media/design editing tools, web content management systems, and MS Office programs.
Assets or Preferences:
- Experience with post-secondary institutions.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite.
- Event coordination experience.
