The Clean Technologies team at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) supports industry and community partners in achieving their innovation goals through the development and application of technologies rooted in circular economy principles. This team is a diverse, inclusive, highly multidisciplinary group of professionals and students with experience and backgrounds in environmental science, applied chemistry, analytical chemistry, and polymer physics and chemistry.
As a Research Technologist-IV, you will play a key role in advancing our innovative research initiatives. This vital position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with leading scientists and industry partners on cutting-edge projects focused on circular materials, converting agricultural, forestry, and plastic wastes into value-added chemicals and products. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who value curiosity, possess strong attention to detail, and have a genuine passion for scientific inquiry. In this role, you will design and execute experiments; perform sample preparation, purification, and property characterization; operate, maintain, and calibrate advanced laboratory instrumentation; analyze and report data; lead proposal development; and uphold the highest standards of accuracy, reliability, and research integrity.

Key Responsibilities
Acting as a technical expert or specialist in circular materials field within a research lab, establishes and optimizes protocols and coordinates conducting of multiple complex experiments. Reviews results and revises protocols as necessary to ensure that project objectives are attained. Oversees and manages lab databases which may include ensuring that experiments are observed and that data is collected and entered correctly. Coordinates with other research team members to facilitate project progress. Creates models, graphs, reports and summaries for use in publications, presentations, and grant applications. Manages inventory and procurement of laboratory supplies and materials. Ensures compliance with safety standards in the laboratory. Assists in the writing of grant proposals. Participates in the recruitment of research staff. Trains, directs, assigns duties to and supervise new laboratory staff and interns.
Qualifications & Skills
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific discipline or higher degree in a scientific major or related (e.g. material science, chemistry, polymer chemistry); OR appropriate combination of education and experience and 5 years' lab/bench or other relevant experience required. Extensive knowledge in the synthesis and performance evaluation of polymeric materials and fermentation-derived bioproducts. Proficiency with common laboratory equipment and software, advanced laboratory techniques and instrumentation. Strong analytical and quantitative skills in statistical analysis and data interpretation. Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail, and high level of accuracy in performing multiple tasks and prioritize effectively. Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. Solid knowledge and experience of chemical reactions, separation, purification, qualification and quantification. Experience with reading and interpreting NMR spectra is an asset. Knowledge of WHMIS and Occupational Health and Safety guidelines, understanding standard laboratory procedures and protocols. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services (WES), International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS) or the Comparative Education Services (CES).
Classification – Research Technologist IV
This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
Remuneration Refer to salary range noted on this posting, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
The compensation range for this job posting is : $74,019.38 - $99,540.46
