Job summary
Reporting to the Director, Capital Projects and Facilities Management, the Project Manager (PM) is responsible for planning and delivering a diverse portfolio of capital, renovation, clinical, and research construction projects at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI).
Acting as UOHI’s representative, the Project Manager leads projects from concept through close-out, coordinating with contractors, consultants, vendors, The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) Engineering and Operations team, and assigned TOH Project Managers. This role ensures projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within approved budgets, and in full compliance with applicable legislation, codes, and institutional standards.
This is an opportunity to contribute directly to a nationally recognized healthcare and research institution while managing complex, high-impact infrastructure projects.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end delivery of assigned construction and renovation projects.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for contractors, consultants, vendors, and internal stakeholders.
- Actively monitor construction activities through regular visits, proactively resolving issues.
- Review and manage RFI’s, change orders, site instructions, and project quotations.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive project documentation, schedules, budgets, and reports.
- Prepare project estimates, specifications, tender documents, and contracts.
- Monitor progress, control costs, and reconcile Construction-in-Progress (CIP) accounts.
- Coordinate commissioning, handover, and training with UOHI and TOH staff.
- Ensure compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, CSA standards, building and fire codes.
- Lead stakeholder consultations and represent UOHI in approval processes.
- Provide strategic advice to senior leadership on project risks, emerging issues, and mitigation strategies.
- Participate in committees and perform cross‑functional duties as assigned.
Required qualifications
- University Degree or College Diploma in Architecture, Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.
- Minimum five (5) years of hands-on construction project management experience, preferably in a hospital or healthcare environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong working knowledge of Ontario occupational health and safety legislation, applicable Ministry of Labour (MOL) requirements, and relevant construction regulations and CSA standards.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Highly organized, detailed-oriented, and able to manage competing priorities.
- Advanced estimating, budgeting, and financial management skills.
- Ability to interpret architectural and engineering drawings and develop technical specifications, including a strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, structural, and architectural design and systems.
Preferred qualifications
- Professional Project Management designation (PMP) considered an asset.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, and related software.
- Bilingualism (English required; French considered as asset).
Working conditions
- On-site work in active hospital and construction environments.
- Regular site visits and occasional extended hours to support project milestones.
