About the role

Purpose 3A is a 34 bed inpatient surgical unit. The surgical nurse is responsible for providing specialized care to patients before, during, and after surgery. They will manage pain, check vital signs, and address any complications that may arise during the post-operative period.

Duties

  • Provide nursing care in accordance with the College of Nurses, organizational and unit standards.
  • Participate and collaborate with other health care providers in provision of patient care.
  • Effectively use the Standards of Nursing Practice and the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care
  • Provide health teaching to patients and family.
  • Comply with legislation, organizational/departmental policies, regulations, standards and procedures
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario in good standing

Skills

  • Human relations skills including empathy, sensitivity, understanding of human and organizational behavior, motivational techniques and counseling skills
  • Demonstrated competencies related to IV therapy, inclusive of central lines.
  • Demonstrated clinical competency in the care and management of pre- and post-operative patients, including effective assessment skills and knowledge of surgical procedures.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Computer literacy in a Microsoft environment and competency with Meditech

Ability

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and interdependently as part of a multidisciplinary team to achieve positive patient outcomes
  • Ability to read, write and communicate to perform the duties of the position
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner, both in person and on the telephone; tact. Courtesy and alertness in public contacts.
