The Structural Supervisor (Projects) is the lead project delivery resource for the Structural Services unit. This role focuses on project implementation, budgeting, scheduling and quality control, while serving as a key liaison between Structural Services and the Planning, Design and Construction unit.

Supervision responsibilities are shared with the Structural Supervisor (Maintenance) and include oversight of internal carpenters, locksmiths and painters, as well as external consultants and contractors supporting structural projects.

Reporting to the Structural Services Manager, this position coordinates and directs the daily workflow associated with construction project implementation. The role performs a wide range of skilled and complex tasks to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time and within budget. Work involves interpreting technical guidelines, policies and building codes, setting priorities, coordinating resources and evaluating results.

This position works closely with other Facilities Management trades, external contractors and university clients to deliver high-quality projects and maintain strong customer service. As a working supervisor, the incumbent also performs the duties of a journeyperson carpenter as required.

What You’ll Do:

  • Lead and coordinate construction project implementation, including scheduling, budgeting, commissioning, work assignments, safety and quality control.
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of carpenters, locksmiths, painters and apprentices on in-house structural projects.
  • Initiate and implement structural repair and upgrade projects and determine required resources.
  • Estimate labour and material costs, order materials and equipment, and maintain project records and reports.
  • Liaise with external contractors to ensure adherence to Facilities Management standards and quality expectations.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Management trades and the Planning, Design and Construction team to support project planning and delivery.
  • Monitor contracted work to ensure compliance with design standards, building codes and commissioning requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of specification standards, preventative maintenance strategies and system upgrades.
  • Develop accurate project scopes, budgets and schedules while coordinating required resources.
  • Act as lead contact for commissioning of structural systems including roofing, concrete, building envelope components, windows, doors, framing and interior finishes.
  • Coordinate maintenance manuals and review as-built documentation for completed projects.
  • Maintain knowledge of building codes, safety requirements and emerging construction practices and technologies.
  • Ensure safe work practices and compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards.
  • Assist the Manager with research, project prioritization and budget planning.
  • Supervise shop areas, equipment and university vehicles used for project work.
  • Perform journeyperson carpenter duties and participate in after-hours call response as required.

Position Requirements

What You’ll Bring to this Position:

  • Successful completion of Grade 12.
  • Must possess a valid Saskatchewan Journeyperson Carpenter’s certificate and/or valid Interprovincial Journeyperson Carpenter’s certificate.
  • Minimum of seven (7) years commercial and industrial experience as a Journeyperson Carpenter.
  • Experience or training in administration or management would be considered an asset.
  • Must possess a valid Saskatchewan vehicle driver’s license (Class 5).

Skills That Will Ensure Your Success in the Role:

  • Knowledge and experience of methods, materials, tools, equipment, and procedures that apply to the structural trades and a general knowledge of electrical and mechanical maintenance used in building construction.
  • Knowledge of the National Building Code of Canada with the ability to interpret, apply, and enforce applicable building codes and standards as related to the installation, maintenance and repair in the fields of carpentry, locksmith, and painting.
  • Ability to supervise employees, including organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
  • Ability to plan, organize and coordinate the operations of the Structural Services unit.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skills to develop employees and complete performance management duties.
  • Knowledge and skill of Microsoft Office software, specifically Word and Excel.
  • Ability to develop, plan, and implement short- and long-range goals.
  • Skill in budget preparation and management.
  • Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.
  • Knowledge of University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks, while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail, and meet deadlines with limited resources.
  • Ability to resolve technical and staff problems as appropriate.
  • Ability to effectively train others in technical procedures, techniques, and skills.
  • Ability to identify and analyze structural problems and to formulate solutions and help implement decisions.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, the general public, external consultants, contractors and vendors.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply blueprints, schematics, manuals and specification sheets.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and at considerable heights.
  • Have knowledge of, understand and comply with University health and safety requirements, Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and all safe work procedures and practices applicable to the position.
  • Ability to properly use safety equipment, machine guards, and safety devices. All personal protective equipment must be used as appropriate.
  • Ability to identify and report unsafe acts, workplace hazards, and incidents that result (or could result) in injury, illness, or environmental damage.
  • Ability to work and encourage others to work and act safely.

Physical Demands

Physical activity is a primary part of the job. Requires the ability to lift, push or pull objects up to 50 pounds. Work will be performed at heights, in crawl spaces, on rooftops and will include the use of ladders and powered mobile lifts. Work involves exposure to unusual elements such as confined spaces, extreme temperatures, chemicals, hazardous materials, dirt, dust, and/or loud noises. Work environment may involve exposure to potentially hazardous material and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and will include the use of personal protective equipment.

Pay Grade CUPE Phase 6 Salary Range $72,183.28 - $97,416.80 Annually Status Permanent Work Hours

Typically Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (as per Facilities Management).

May be required to work overtime and weekends; may be required to work various shifts.

Required to be on the call-out schedule for emergency after hour calls.
