Qualifications

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related study area, including laboratory analysis techniques required.

OR

  • Completion of a Community College course in a related discipline with one years = directly-related experience required.

OR

  • High school completion with job-related options with a minimum of four years = directly-related experience required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience conducting agronomic research required.
  • Experience using and maintaining field and lab research equipment (handheld and hydraulic soil samplers, weather stations and data loggers, neutron probe, GPS, soil and plant grinders, grain cleaning equipment) required.
  • Experience collecting and organizing agronomic field data and samples, maintaining trial history records, and basic data analysis using R or SAS software required.
  • Writing research reports required.
  • An acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Current working knowledge of common agricultural crop production practices used in Western Canada (small grains, oilseeds, legumes, row crops, and forage crops) required.
  • Agronomic research techniques (soil sampling, biomass harvesting, plant stand assessment, crop phenology ratings, scouting for crop pests) required.
  • Experimental record keeping, data compilation, statistical analysis required.
  • Ability to create spreadsheets (Excel) and presentations (PowerPoint), summary reports (Word), and summary statistics and graphing data (Excel and SAS) required.
  • Experience with GIS software would be an asset.
  • Ability to coordinate a summer field research program required.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement when solving field research problems required.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team required.
  • Multi-tasking and time management skills required.
  • Ability to train and supervise summer students required.
  • Ability to assist with graduate student projects required.
  • Ability to train and coordinate Tech 2 research technicians and summer students required.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal) required.
  • Physically capable of performing the duties as assigned, which may include mobility (walking, kneeling, bending), moderate to heavy lifting (50 lb seed or fertilizer bags), and working outside in hot/wet/cold conditions during the field season required.
  • Satisfactory work record, including satisfactory attendance and punctuality, is required.

OTHER JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid driver’s license required. Class 3 driver’s license required.

Key responsibilities

  • Execute small plot and field scale research experiments under direction of the supervising professor at the University of Manitoba Carman and Glenlea Research stations, Fort Gary Campus, and on-farm locations.
  • Assist in preparing experimental materials for planting or deployment in the field.
  • Establish, maintain, and harvest field research plots.
  • Collect, organize, and process research samples.
  • Conduct preliminary statistical analysis of research data.
  • Assist in operating, calibrating, and maintaining field and lab research equipment.
  • Prepare for and participate in field tours of research plots.
  • Supervise 1-4 summer students, or other casual help in field and lab duties. Assist graduate students and post-doctoral fellows in the execution of their project research work. Provide guidance in areas where the candidate is qualified.
  • Requisition laboratory and field supplies as well as source experimental materials under direction of the supervising professor.
  • Execute library research, scan images, and assist in creating presentations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
