Communicative Disorders Assistant
OSSTF - PSSP 1 - $31.54 - $48.04 per hour (plus vacation pay)
One (1) Temporary Position
Position Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Speech, Language and Hearing Services, the Communicative Disorders Assistant works under the direction of qualified Speech-Language Pathologists to implement approved programming in support of students.
Major Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP), assist with the identification of students' communication needs through the implementation, trial, and support of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), including both low-tech and high-tech communication systems and Special Equipment Amount (SEA) technology.
Coordinate and support AAC and assistive technology trials, including the preparation, programming, customization, implementation, troubleshooting, data collection, and documentation required to inform recommendations.
Develop, adapt, and prepare low-tech AAC materials, including communication boards, visual supports, symbol-based resources, and other individualized communication tools.
Provide short-term, individualized and small-group support to students to implement AAC recommendations, develop communication skills, and promote successful use of communication systems across educational environments.
Consult with school teams and families to facilitate the effective implementation of AAC systems and communication supports by providing resources, coaching, and practical strategies for use across school settings.
Assist with the preparation, programming, maintenance, inventory, distribution, tracking, and organization of AAC devices, assistive technology, and hearing equipment to ensure functionality, accessibility, and availability.
Perform routine checks, troubleshooting, cleaning, and minor maintenance of hearing equipment and AAC devices, and coordinate repairs, replacements, and equipment loans as required.
Create, organize, and maintain AAC programming materials, communication resources, departmental inventories, and equipment records.
Assist in the development and delivery of educational resources and professional learning related to AAC, assistive technology, communication supports, and hearing equipment for school staff and families.
Participate in parent meetings, case conferences, staff meetings, and school-based consultations as required.
Maintain accurate clinical, equipment, inventory, and service records in accordance with departmental procedures and relevant Board practices.
Assist with ongoing follow-up to support students' communication needs by monitoring the continued effectiveness, appropriate use, and maintenance of AAC systems, communication supports, and hearing equipment.
Qualifications And Experience
Successful completion of a post graduate diploma in a Communication Disorders Assistant training program.
Minimum 2 Years Of Experience Working As a CDA.
Previous/current working experience in the field of Alternative and Augmentative communication preferred.
A demonstrated ability to work with technology.
Skills And Competencies
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
A demonstrated ability to work with technology.
Strong organizational skills.
Ability to travel by car within York Region
