THE ROLE:
PETRONAS Canada is seeking a Senior Market Fundamentals Analyst – North America to join our team in Calgary, AB. Reporting to the Manager, Marketing, this role will provide quantitative market analysis and short-term trading support across natural gas, crude oil, and natural gas liquids (NGL) markets. The successful candidate will apply strong analytical and data science skills to monitor and forecast supply, demand, storage, and price movements across North American energy markets. This role will deliver actionable insights to support trading, marketing, and strategic decisions across the company’s portfolio.
Working closely with the Marketing, Trading, Midstream, and Strategy teams, the analyst will play a key role in developing PETRONAS’ market intelligence capability, ensuring that short-term analytics align with long-term market perspectives.
HOW YOU WILL CONTRIBUTE:
- Conduct short- to medium-term market analysis of North American natural gas, crude oil, and NGL fundamentals, including supply, demand, flows, storage, and pricing
- Provide quantitative support to trading and marketing activities, developing insights into regional spreads, basis movements, and arbitrage opportunities
- Build, maintain, and refine fundamental and statistical models for short-term price forecasting, supply–demand balances, and market risk assessment
- Monitor and analyze pipeline, refinery, and midstream infrastructure operations and constraints, as well as regulatory and weather-related developments impacting markets
- Develop and automate data ingestion and processing systems to integrate real-time and historical data from multiple sources (market feeds, regulatory agencies, subscription databases)
- Produce and present daily, weekly, and ad hoc market reports highlighting price trends, fundamental shifts, and key trading implications for senior leadership and commercial teams
- Collaborate with traders and commercial managers to identify data-driven opportunities and improve decision-making through robust analytics and scenario modeling
- Support cross-commodity analysis to understand linkages between gas, oil, and NGL markets, including feedstock substitution, liquids recovery economics, and LNG netbacks
- Participate in backtesting and performance review of trading and forecasting models to improve accuracy and responsiveness
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of PETRONAS’ market analytics tools, data infrastructure, and modeling methodologies
WHAT YOU BRING:
- Undergraduate degree in Commerce, Economics, Finance, Engineering, or related; a graduate degree would be an asset
- Minimum of ten years of analytical experience; exposure to natural gas/crude oil analysis and/or understanding of natural gas pipeline grid strongly preferred
- Well-demonstrated technical acumen including Excel and PowerPoint expertise and the ability to work with large data sets. Data mining, programming (VBA, SQL), econometrics, familiarity with Access, and forecasting skills would be an asset.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, with the ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships with all levels in the organization
- Ability to manage and adapt quickly and comfortably to changing priorities
- Keen attention to detail with the ability to develop answers to a broad range of questions
