Ready to start your journey? Apply now for an opportunity to join our world class team on January 12, 2026! The Neonatal Intensive Care & Pediatric General Surgery and Gynecology Unit are currently recruiting RNs to join our Residency Flex Team!

What is the Flex Team? Are you ready to expand your nursing expertise across diverse care settings? The 5B/NICU Flex Team offers a unique opportunity to develop a valued skill set foundational to both inpatient care on the 5B General Surgery and Gynecology Unit and critical care in the NICU.

As part of the Flex Team, you will begin with eight months of focused training on 5B, followed by a year-long training program in the NICU. Upon completion, you will flex between both units, supporting their dynamic needs while building capacity and resilience in these critical care areas.

This innovative model emphasizes professional growth and enhanced patient care by:

  • Cross-training nurses to effectively transition between NICU and 5B, ensuring flexibility and optimal staffing during patient surges.
  • Strengthening critical care nursing skills to provide exceptional care for critically ill patients and their families.
  • Leveraging patient population similarities to streamline transitions, enhance continuity of care, and improve patient outcomes.
  • Supporting seamless patient flow between the NICU and 5B, reducing delays and optimizing access to care.
  • Increasing ventilator-trained staff to bolster surge capacity and hospital preparedness.

What types of patients does 5B typically care for? 5B cares for patients specifically under the surgical services of general surgery and gynecology. We are a 25-bed unit that incorporates a special stepdown unit that cares for patients who are graduating from an intensive care environment (like the NICU), and still require a higher level of nursing care and observation. We see patients from newborn to 18 years of age. Staff are encouraged to grow and contribute through practice, education, and research, as we support continued professional development and ongoing opportunities. We are a highly collaborative team-based unit, that provide excellence in surgical pediatric care!

What kinds of patients can be expected in the NICU? The SickKids Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offers tertiary and quaternary medical and surgical care for newborns up to four weeks old. It is a high acuity unit dedicated to caring for the most complex and medically fragile neonatal patients in the province ' and often across the country. Neonates are admitted from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), across Canada, and globally, for highly specialized care and procedures.

Care Can Include (but Not Limited) To

  • Management of care across the phases of pre-operative, post-operative, trauma, acute and chronic care
  • Management of care of critically ill and premature neonates across various phases of care
  • Involvement and care of patients undergoing new and innovative procedures and care pathways
  • Central Venous Access Device care, maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Administration of blood products, oxygen therapy, enteral and parenteral nutrition
  • Recognition and management of surgical complications and post- operative emergencies
  • Work in collaboration with a highly skilled interdisciplinary surgical team, including a robust surgical NP team for each surgical service
  • Work with the Acute Pain Service team to champion best practices in pain management
  • Be a valued team member for patients undergoing life altering/innovative surgical procedures

Who is this open for? This stream is designed for new graduate nurses or those new to SickKids, or current Registered Nurses who lack prior NICU experience but express interest in surgery and NICU. Candidates with less than 1 year of clinical RN experience are encouraged to apply to our New Graduate Nurse job opening.

Here's What You'll Need

  • Graduate of an approved Baccalaureate Nursing Program
  • Temporary or General Class License through the College of Nurses of Ontario; if temporary, registration to write the NCLEX-RN within 30 days of your start date
  • If second attempt, registration to write the NCLEX-RN within 90 days of your start date
  • Recent graduates working towards CNO registration are encouraged to apply
  • Passion to work in both the NICU and General Surgery Area
  • Previous clinical placement experience in paediatrics or experience working with children is a strong asset but not mandatory
  • Clinical experience or clinical externship experience in an acute care hospital is a strong asset but not mandatory
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use your critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork abilities
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusivity

Employment type

  • Permanent full-time (0.8-1.0 FTE; 30-37.5 hours/week)
  • Shift: days/nights/weekends/holiday
