Summer Day Camp - Assistant Programmer
About the role
Westside Recreation Centre is a world-class facility based on a lifestyle and wellness concept. Since 2000, we have been providing families with high quality and accessible recreation facilities, programs and services. The Summer Day Camp - Assistant Programmer assists in the planning, implementation, and daily operations associated with general summer day camps at Westside. This is a supervisory position, reporting to the Children's Programs & Camps Supervisor.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the planning and implementation of general summer day camps for children 6-12Y
- Assist in the research of camp activities and the development of camp curricula and lesson plans
- Assist in recruitment, hiring, and training of staff and volunteers
- Supervision of staff and volunteers
- Managing participant behaviors in collaboration with front-line leaders and supervisors
- Complete administrative tasks including scheduling, data entry, filing, and program administration
- Maintaining the safety of program areas, equipment, and supplies
- Enforce all Westside camp policies for staff, volunteers, participants, and parents
- Be actively involved with the risk management of department areas including Safe Work Procedures, inspections and WHMIS requirements
- Instruction of general summer day camps as needed
- Evaluation of camps based on delivery and execution, feedback from participants, and registration data
- To return all Customer Service inquiries within 24 hours
- Take on a supervisory role within the Children and Youth department to provide coverage, staff supervision and team collaboration when required
Qualifications:
- Current Alberta Approved First Aid training agency - CSA Standard Z1210-17 Intermediate First Aid
- Valid Vulnerable Sector Search required
- Minimum of 2 years of recreation program or day camp leadership experience
- Minimum 1 year supervisory experience required
- High 5 is considered an asset
- Xplor software knowledge is considered an asset
Skills Required:
- Ability to work in a large team environment
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to lead large groups
- Ability to deal with multiple tasks at a time
- Good customer service skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Current working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office 365
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
Physical/Psychological Demands:
- Ability to work in a fast-paced noisy environment
- Ability to work inside as well as outside when required
- Ability to lift 20-25lbs on a daily basis
- The successful candidate must hold high ethical standards as they are working with a vulnerable population and has access to confidential information
Employment Term:
- Approximate employment dates: May 4 - September 02, 2026
- Primarily Monday – Friday. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required
- This position will work 37.5 hours per week
- Remote working not available for this position
