Last Updated: August 2025 Purpose The Field Finance Specialist plays a vital support role in ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting across our international ministry teams. This position carries responsibility for overall general ledger (GL) accounting functions, including support specific to Canada and broader organizational needs, as well as providing guidance to field finance professionals and Program Teams.
By supporting internal financial controls and ensuring Program teams have the information they need to keep accounting current, this role helps ensure that North American financials accurately reflect global activity. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, collaborative, and committed to strengthening financial stewardship in support of our shared mission. This role is expected to function with regular supervision by the direct manager.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Provide guidance and support to program staff to ensure accurate financial records and compliance
- Serve as a resource for staff working in Program Teams by providing guidance, tools, and technical support to ensure accounting records are accurate, complete, and up to date.
- Help staff understand and apply financial policies and procedures, working collaboratively to resolve issues and improve consistency.
- Support internal financial controls and timely reporting to ensure program accounting is properly reflected in North American financials, overseas resources are duly safeguarded, and financial operations comply with local best practices and legal requirements.
- Build trust and partnership through regular communication and collaboration.
Review financial submissions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with policies
- Review submissions for completeness, accuracy, appropriate documentation, and alignment with accounting standards and internal procedures.
- Oversee compliance with internal policies, donor and government regulations, and established procedures. Elevate significant concerns to the Finance Director.
Manage and reconcile general ledger accounts and support financial closings and audits
- Audit, balance, and correct the contents of balance sheet accounts.
- Analyze and reconcile subsidiary ledgers to the general ledger and determine appropriate corrections.
- Review accruals and interdepartmental charges for accuracy and completeness.
- Support the external audit process by preparing schedules, reports, and documentation as requested.
- Assist with the accurate and timely preparation of year-end reporting, including Canada-specific filings, in coordination with relevant staff.
- Identify inconsistencies or improvement opportunities in how grants and restricted funds are recorded and reported and collaborate with staff to support consistent and accurate financial treatment.
Develop and implement procedures to maintain accurate and efficient financial systems.
- Design and implement procedures that improve accuracy, maximize efficiency, and enhance the effectiveness of financial systems across departments.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies in all areas of responsibility.
- Collaborate with staff to document procedures, processes, and best practices.
- Develop, document, and improve standardized controls and procedures.
- Identify and recommend opportunities for innovation and process improvement.
Analyze financial data and create reports to support decision-making
- Analyze financial information to identify issues, trends, and opportunities, and provide insights to support operational and strategic decision-making.
- Create and distribute custom reports in response to staff queries.
Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of and adherence to standard accounting principles, including their application in international and nonprofit settings.
Handle specialized accounting tasks with consideration for global operations such as fixed asset processing, grant reporting, and/or benefit accounting processes, with awareness of how these may intersect with global operations.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned including collaborative projects and support for new or evolving financial systems, tools, and training across the organization.

Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field required.
- Chartered Professional Accountant Designation (CPA or equivalent, or a minimum enrollment in CPA program) preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant accounting experience, including general ledger work, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
- Demonstrated expertise in accounting software, including Sage Intacct.
- Familiarity with nonprofit or international financial environments, including institutional or high compliance donor grant management.
- Direct experience collaborating with culturally diverse and geographically dispersed teams
- Prior experience with accounting for grants and restricted funding preferred.
Language Skills
- Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required.
- French and/or Spanish language ability is an asset
