About the role:
The Hospital strives to deliver care that is centred on patients and families. Patient and Family Centred Care (PFCC)
is the provision of care that is respectful of, and responsive to individual patient/family preferences, needs, and values
and ensures that those values guide all decisions. Creating a caring environment for patients and families ensures
continuity of care and fosters a learning environment. Applicants are required to have a demonstrated knowledge,
understanding and commitment to this care philosophy.
Psychologist will work with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Unit (CAMHU) at Thunder Bay Regional Health
Sciences Centre (TBRHSC). The CAMHU is dedicated to supporting youth experiencing acute mental health
challenges that require emergency care. The unit offers a safe, structured, and therapeutic environment, focusing on
assessment, stabilization, and short‑term treatment. Admissions occur through the Emergency Department at
TBRHSC or via transfer from regional hospitals for youth living outside of Thunder Bay
The psychologist works within an interprofessional team that includes physicians, nurse practitioner, nurses, social
workers, child and youth workers and Indigenous Care Coordinators. Together, the team supports youth in crisis by
helping stabilize behaviours, enhancing their coping and problem‑solving skills and assisting with discharge planning
back to the youth's home community.
The psychologist will support the CAMHU team by contributing to a comprehensive understanding of each youth's
diagnostic and clinical profile, which are translated into practical stabilization and treatment strategies. The
psychologist may be frequently involved in completing differential assessments of neuro‑developmental disorders
and pre‑morbid functioning issues from other mental health conditions. Working collaboratively with psychiatry and
other team members, the psychologist will also assist with the provision of family education and brief therapeutic
interventions when appropriate. The role also includes consultation, informal staff training, and supporting program
evaluation initiatives.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Education/Experience:
* Doctorate from a CPA/APA Accredited Clinical Psychology Program.
* CPA/APA accredited internship/residency (or equivalent) in Clinical Psychology.
* Unencumbered Registration or eligible for registration as a Psychologist with the College of Psychologists and
Behaviour Analysts of Ontario is mandatory.
* Authorized area of practice in Clinical Psychology is mandatory.
* Authorized client populations in children and adolescents is mandatory.
* Education, training and experience in applying evidence‑based psychological approaches for a range of common
mental health presentations.
Skills/Abilities:
* Proficient in psychological assessment and diagnosis of complex child and adolescent mental health and
neurodevelopmental presentations.
* Skilled in delivering brief, evidence‑based therapies (e.g., CBT, DBT‑informed, ACT) and translating findings into
actionable care plans.
* Ability to provide informal clinical training and support capacity‑building among staff.
* Skilled at translating psychological findings into practical interventions for implementation by other care providers.
* Excellent communication skills to provide clear, compassionate psychoeducation to families and caregivers.
Assets:
* Experience in acute or inpatient child/adolescent mental health settings.
* Familiarity with neurodevelopmental assessment tools and Ontario mental health legislation.
* Training in Indigenous mental health approaches and/or fluency in an Indigenous language.
* Involvement in research, quality improvement, or program evaluation initiatives.
* Supervisory experience with psychology trainees or professionals under supervision.
Salary Range: $61.500 to 79.750
