The Subbarao Lab at SickKids is a leading research group focused on pediatric respiratory health, with a strong emphasis on longitudinal cohort studies, clinical trials, and translational research. The lab is known for its innovative approaches to understanding early-life determinants of asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions, and for its collaborative work across disciplines and institutions.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Research Program Manager to support Dr. Padmaja Subbarao in leading and managing the lab's research operations. This role is central to the strategic and operational success of the lab, ensuring the smooth execution of complex multi-site studies, development of new initiatives, and effective team leadership.
The Manager will oversee a multidisciplinary team, including a research project manager, coordinators, assistants, and trainees while maintaining strong relationships with collaborators, institutional departments, and external partners. This position requires a blend of leadership, project management, financial oversight, and research expertise.
Here's What You'll Get To Do Leadership & Strategic Planning
- Collaborate with the PI and senior team members to define and deliver program goals using an objectives and key results (OKRs) framework to align team efforts with scientific and operational priorities.
- Develop quarterly and annual OKRs for the lab and work with individual team members to develop individual level OKRs, track progress, and adjust to achieve goals.
- Identify and resolve operational challenges; establish and refine standards of practice.
- Lead the development and implementation of program improvements and strategic initiatives.
- Organize and facilitate key program activities including weekly team meetings, quarterly budget reviews, and performance evaluations.
- Provide mentorship and identify professional development opportunities for staff.
Program & Management
- Develop and implement program evaluation tools to monitor progress and identify areas for improvement.
- Analyze program goals and develop action plans to address gaps and enhance quality.
- Recruit, hire, onboard, and manage staff across various roles.
- Oversee staff performance, training, and development in alignment with hospital policies.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for the PI's research portfolio.
- Maintain effective relationships with internal departments (HR, Finance, Ethics, etc.).
Financial Oversight
- In collaboration with the PI and Program Coordinator, manage program budgets including grants and cost centres.
- Make informed decisions regarding allocation of funds and resource planning.
- Monitor financial health of the program, ensuring cost-effectiveness and budget compliance.
- Anticipate and resolve financial queries and reporting requirements.
- Create budget for CIHR and other granting agency applications.
Research Operations
- Provide project management support for PI- and trainee-led grant applications.
- Maintain CIHR ResearchNet reports and liaise with collaborators on grant progress.
- Manage research ethics submissions, renewals, and closures via the Research Ethics Application System.
- Support implementation and maintenance of the Prospective Asthma Registry and other clinic-based research initiatives.
- Operational oversight of ongoing clinical research studies and assess operational feasibility of new collaborations.
Collaboration & Integration
- Work closely with the CHILD Cohort Study National Coordinating Centre (NCC), including the Deputy Director and Senior Program Manager, to support strategic direction and implementation.
- Collaborate with the Asthma Director and Respiratory Medicine Division Head to support clinic-based translational research and initiatives.
- Foster partnerships with internal and external stakeholders to advance the lab's research mission.
Here's What You'll Need
- Master's degree in Health Sciences, Health Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in clinical research or research program management.
- Proven experience managing multidisciplinary teams and research training activities.
- Strong background in graduate-level research or health-related contexts is an asset.
- Demonstrated success in coordinating and improving complex programs or projects.
- Experience in financial management and staff supervision.
- Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and writing skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience implementing OKRs or similar strategic frameworks.
