About the role

The University Photographer & Digital Asset Coordinator plays a key creative and technical role within the Marketing & Communications team. This position is responsible for producing high-quality photographic content, leading art direction for major campaigns, and managing UPEI’s digital asset management (DAM) system (currently Brandfolder). The role ensures the University’s visual storytelling is brand-aligned, strategic, and accessible across the institution, directly supporting student recruitment, advancement, and institutional reputation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Photography & Editing

  • Capture a wide range of professional imagery including campaign visuals, institutional events, faculty and student portraits, and editorial-style storytelling photography
  • Plan and execute shoots using both natural and studio lighting techniques
  • Retouch and edit images to ensure accurate color, tone, and quality across multiple outputs (print, web, digital, social media)
  • Prepare final photography assets in appropriate formats and resolutions to meet diverse marketing and communications needs
  • Maintain, organize, and update photography equipment, ensuring readiness for on-campus and off-campus assignments
  • Stay current with photography trends and best practices to keep UPEI’s visual identity competitive and fresh

Art Direction

  • Provide creative direction and input for major campaigns, including concept development, visual style, and collaboration with designers and the media producer
  • Contribute to creative briefs and ensure imagery aligns with campaign goals

Digital Asset Management

  • Lead coordination, governance, and adoption of UPEI’s DAM platform (Brandfolder)
  • Establish metadata/tagging standards and train campus stakeholders on asset use
  • Ensure assets are organized, accessible, and usable across faculties and departments
  • Steward UPEI’s institutional visual history through responsible curation, preservation, and accessibility of digital assets

Shoot Coordination

  • Independently manage logistics for photography sessions, including liaising with campus clients, securing models, and arranging locations
  • Take ownership of scheduling and pre-production planning to ensure efficiency and alignment with project priorities

Documentation & Project Coordination

  • Record photography schedules and project tasks in Asana to provide visibility to the creative team and maintain a historical archive of photography projects

Social Media Workflow Support

  • Deliver timely photography content for UPEI’s social media platforms
  • Ensure imagery is prepared and available for quick deployment to digital channels and support deployment at times

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A college diploma in Photography, Visual Communications, Media Arts, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and professional experience will be considered
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of professional photography experience in marketing, media, or institutional settings
  • Strong proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud (Lightroom, Photoshop, Bridge, Illustrator, InDesign, Premiere Pro)
  • Experience with digital asset management platforms, including governance, metadata standards, and training
  • Demonstrated ability to manage photography projects independently, including scheduling, coordinating models/locations, and delivering on tight timelines
    Knowledge of brand management and marketing principles
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders across campus and with external partners/vendors
  • Demonstrated adaptability to fast-paced environments and shifting priorities.
  • Availability for irregular hours (early mornings, evenings, weekends) to cover institutional events
  • Ability to transport and set up photography equipment on and off campus
  • Strong problem-solving skills in dynamic environments (e.g., live events, unpredictable conditions)
