Job description:

Commissionaires is a not-for-profit provider of security services that operates across the nation. There are now 15 divisions representing all the provinces of Canada and three territories. Commissionaires Southern Alberta is responsible for providing professional security services for Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Suffield. We have protected people and property for public and private sector clients from coast to coast for more than 90 years.

As part of our ever-expanding workforce, we are currently seeking an experienced People and Culture (PC) professional to join our team in the role of PC Specialist, Business Partner.

Job Purpose

The Human Resources Business Partner (HRBP) plays a key role in aligning business objectives with employees and management across multiple departments and business units. This position is both strategic and hands-on, providing HR guidance on employee relations, performance management, organizational development, and compliance. The HRBP supports operational leaders by offering expert advice and implementing HR programs that foster a productive and compliant work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

HR Partnership and Consultation

  • Serve as a trusted advisor to Division Managers, Supervisors, and Client Service Managers on HR-related matters.
  • Deliver proactive support and solutions in employee relations, performance management, organizational changes, and succession planning.
  • Provide policy interpretation and ensure alignment with current employment laws and internal HR practices.
  • Assist in the administration and interpretation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA); support grievance handling and labor relations matters and recommend proactive labor relations strategy development.

Compliance & Risk Mitigation

  • Ensure compliance with applicable employment legislation including the Employment Standards Code (Alberta), Alberta Human Rights Act, Canada Labour Code, and Employment Equity Act.
  • Support and conduct workplace investigations related to employee behavior, harassment, and other complex HR issues, ensuring fair, confidential, and well-documented processes.
  • Maintain records and HR data to support legal compliance, audit readiness, and organizational reporting.
  • Provide support to employees in recommending mental health resources after traumatic incidents.

Operational HR Support

  • Support end-to-end HR activities including employee onboarding, performance evaluations, disciplinary actions, and offboarding.
  • Work collaboratively with internal HR team members on company-wide HR programs, change initiatives, and policy updates.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of HR policies and procedures to support organizational consistency and effectiveness.

Metrics and Reporting

  • Prepare and analyze key HR metrics such as employee relations trends, absenteeism, turnover, and workforce demographics turnover risks, engagement trends and DEI analysis.
  • Provide regular reporting to the VP, People and Culture to support strategic planning and continuous improvement efforts.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • University Degree in Human Resources or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive HR experience, preferably in both unionized and non-unionized environments.
  • Strong experience in employee relations, HR compliance, and generalist HR functions.
  • Experience in grievance mediation or arbitration.
  • Experience supporting shift-based or high-risk workforces.
  • Experience supporting multiple departments or business units is an asset.
  • Veteran or experience working with Canadian Forces/RCMP organizations is an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge & Skills Requirements

  • Strong knowledge of:

  • Canada Labour Code
  • Employment Equity Act
  • Collective agreements and unionized environments
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships with leaders and employees.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.
  • CPHR designation (or working toward it) is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Operates in a confidential capacity within the HR professional track.
  • Based in Calgary NE HQ in a business casual office setting.
  • Requires flexibility in schedule to meet business needs.
  • Travel to Southern Alberta sites as required.
