The Cleaner is responsible for cleaning common areas at YWCA Women’s Shelter and for preparing rooms for occupancy.

ABOUT YWCA TORONTO – WOMEN’S SHELTER

YWCA Women's Shelter has been in operation since 1991. The shelter provides safe and secure emergency shelter for women, gender-diverse people and their children who are fleeing violence. YWCA Women's Shelter is staffed 24 hours a day and can welcome up to 11 families at one time in its 33 bed shelter. In addition to shelter, women, gender-diverse people and their children are provided with food, clothing, diapers and assistance with efforts to obtain housing, Social Assistance, medical and legal help. Staff, which have expertise in numerous areas (i.e. job readiness, advocacy, housing, parenting, effects of violence on women, gender-diverse people and their children), are available to work with women and gender-diverse people as they begin to establish lives that are free from violence.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cleans all common areas, emptying the wastebaskets, dusting furniture and wiping all surfaces including windowsills;

  • Cleans the front door, sweeps the front steps and clears debris from the front entrance of the shelter

  • Cleans and disinfects washrooms, removes garbage and replenishes paper towel and toilet paper in all washrooms as needed;

  • Cleans kitchen bi-weekly including; wiping cupboards, dishwasher, microwave, fridges, stove, oven counter tops and walls;

  • Cleans empty bedrooms including: wipe mattress, all surfaces with disinfectant, vacuum and clean out any remaining belongings and garbage;

  • Cleans kitchen in the absence of kitchen staff;

  • Assists with garbage and recycling removal;

  • Assists with light clean up of garbage and debris on the property when required

  • Ensures that the Health and Safety Guidelines are followed in accordance with the policies and procedures of YWCA Toronto

  • Ensures tasks are performed in compliance with WHMIS and other legislated requirements including the Health and Safety Act;

  • Participates in fire safety and health and safety training as required;

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A generalized education at high-school level (Cases for Equivalency will be considered);

  • 1 to 3 years directly related experience

  • Knowledge of cleaning products and their use

  • Ability to work independently

  • Ability to lift 15 kg and bend to perform duties safely

  • Ability to safely use a ladder

  • Completion of WHMIS training

  • Ability to interact in a respectful and professional manner with a diverse community of women and young women within shelter and housing environments

  • Understanding and ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Experience working in a residential setting an asset
