Aquatic Monitoring Program Assistant
Location: 11821 123 St NW, Edmonton, AB, T5L 0G7
Closing Date: Until Suitable Candidate Found
Position Status: Full-time (40 hours/week), Temporary (until March 31, 2027)
Reporting to the Environmental Monitoring Manager, the Aquatic Program Assistant will be required to work on the Environmental Monitoring Team to deliver the Otipemisiwak Métis Government Environment and Climate Change (ECC) department’s projects and initiatives. The successful candidate support the Aquatic Environmental Coordinator with the implementation of water quality and fish hleath community-based monitoring (CBM) programs, and assist in data collection. The ideal candidate will have experience working with Indigenous communities, coordinating community-based monitoring volunteers, and have an understanding of aquatic health concerns within Alberta.

The successful candidate will support the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s efforts to implement and undertake environmental initiatives and programs aimed at fulfilling the ECC department’s following pillars:

- Reducing impacts on the environment
- Community driven involvement
Key Responsibilities
- Support the planning and implementation of aquatic monitoring programs, including fish health and water quality.
- Coordinate and engage volunteers in Citizen-led aquatic monitoring initiatives.
- Communicate aquatic program plans, updates, results, and findings to Otipemisiwak Métis Government Citizens and the public through in-person and digital platforms (e.g., web content, phone calls, emails, presentations, tradeshow booths, newsletters)
- Assist and participate in planning logistics for community events, volunteer engagements with Métis Citizens, and fieldwork for CBM’s.
- Assist with data collection, management, analysis, and reporting for fieldwork and community engagements.
- Support delivery of specific programs:
- Askîy Water Guardians Program
- Askîy Targeted Fish Health Monitoring Program
- Askîy Community Fish Health Monitoring Program
- Liaise with both internal and external stakeholders (e.g., Elders, Knowledge holders, Métis Citizens, Government personnel, Otipemisiwak Métis Government staff including other departments, and community partners).
- Support Environment and Climate Change activities, including assisting in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, and priorities of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
- Other duties as required or assigned.
Skills & Competencies
- Knowledge of water quality, fish ecology, and aquatic ecosystem health.
- Understanding of relevant environmental legislation (e.g., Federal Fisheries Act, Alberta Public Lands Act).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint).
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, including professional email etiquette.
- Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to coordinate volunteers and community engagements.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong working relationships.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
- Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities.
- Ability to work with and convey messages to different audiences.
- Political and cultural sensitivity.
- Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture, people, and values is an asset.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in Applied Sciences, Conservation, Biology, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Resource Management, or a related field.
- A related degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Minimum of two (2) years of related work experience is required.
- Experience with ArcGIS Online platform and associated products (e.g., Story Maps, Collector, Survey 123, Field Maps) is an asset.
Other Requirements
- Ability to work regular office hours of Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, as well as occasional evenings and weekends, as required.
- Requirement to work in-office in Edmonton, Alberta.
- Ability to travel throughout Alberta, if given notice.
- Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
