Licensed Practical Nurse - Operating Room Technician
About the role
Your Opportunity:
As an ORT (Operating Room Technician) for Unit 210 Surgical Suite in the Orthopedic Surgery Centre (OSC) at the Royal Alexandra Hospital you will be responsible for providing peri-operative patient care for arthroplasty, urology, bariatric, breast and general surgery patients. As a member of the multidisciplinary team, the Operating Room Technician (ORT) provides peri-operative patient care using the nursing process in accordance with CLPNA Standards of Practice and the Competencies for the Perioperative Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The ORT demonstrates competence in delivering safe, effective, and efficient care in both scrub and circulating roles as an integral part of the surgical team. They are responsible for ensuring safe patient care throughout the patient’s entire stay in the surgical suite, including the Pre-Op area. Working within their full scope of practice, the ORT performs a range of clinical nursing activities from basic to advanced, guided by evidence-based practices and measurable outcomes. The ORT acts as a patient advocate and serves as a vital link between the surgical suite and other patient care units. In addition, the ORT upholds and promotes the professional nursing role by continuously evaluating their own clinical practice and identifying ongoing educational needs to maintain competency and high standards of care. The nurse applies a specialized body of nursing knowledge to support optimal patient outcomes.

Required Qualifications:
Completion of an accredited Licensed Practical Nurse education program. Active, or eligible for, registration and a practice permit as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses and Health Care Aides of Alberta (CLHA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
Additional Required Qualifications:
MUST have completed the Peri-Operative course or have the equivalent of 3 years’ Operating Room experience. Successful completion of an approved Practical Nursing educational program (diploma or certificate in practical nursing). Registration with the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA). Current BCLS-HCP required. Experience in an acute care Surgical Suite with Arthroplasty Hip, Knee and Shoulder surgeries. Pre-Op experience is required. Ability to perform consistently in a highly organized and rapid moving environment. Ability to collaborate within the expectations of an integrated team. Demonstrates advanced problem-solving skills integrating critical thinking and good judgment. Ability to demonstrate communications skills that promote respect and a positive team environment. Ability to stand scrubbed for many hours and to meet the physical demands of the position. Incumbent should have effective interpersonal and written communication skills.
