Position Overview:

Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Junior Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Analyst in the Information Technology Department. Reporting to the Program Manger, GIS and Data, the key role of this position will be to assist in the implementation of key GIS initiatives at the City of Guelph within Public Works and Environmental Services. The mandate of GIS services is to provide leadership and support to City departments enabling them to provide better service to the public through GIS technology services and innovation and guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision – an inclusive, connected, prosperous city where we look after each other and our environment.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Working on a range of GIS data management tasks, such as digitization and data conversions, verification of data sources and accuracy
  • Metadata creation
  • Creating web mapping content for the City’s intranet and internet GIS websites
  • Creating GIS mapping products for a variety of business areas
  • Assisting GIS users with licensing inquiries and issues
  • Conducting some field work, to assist operational units with data gathering and verification
  • Learning other skills fundamental to operating a high-functioning GIS environment
  • Support data migration activities for ERP project by preparing, validating, and transforming GIS datasets
  • Assist with GIS integration across ERP modules, such as asset management and work order management
  • Participate in ERP testing cycles, validating spatial workflows and reporting issues
  • Align GIS and ERP asset data through field verification and dataset reconciliation
  • Contribute to corporate data governance efforts as they relate to ERP spatial data
  • Participate in cross-functional project meetings to gather requirements and resolve GIS integration issues
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and requirements

  • A university degree in Computer Science, Business, Geomatics, GIS Environmental Management or a related discipline and considerable experience supporting GIS and related systems in a medium to large sized corporate environment, preferably in a municipal setting. Candidates with an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of digital map production, data management and GIS analysis.
  • Familiarity with GIS concepts in raster and vector data models, map projections, scale and resolution, accuracy and precision.
  • Working knowledge with ArcGIS software and its associated modules, and Windows operating systems.
  • Experience using asset management software such as Esri Cityworks or IBM Maximo an asset.
  • Analytical, problem solving and technical skills to manage, maintain, update and prepare data and to resolve technical problems and information requirements by gathering/analyzing data.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to support the preparation of reports, correspondence, spatial analysis, resource queries, standard and customized map and information products and presentations.
  • Interpersonal and teamwork skills to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team and with staff clients.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize/work within tight deadlines
  • Working knowledge of computer software packages Microsoft Office products including MS-Excel and MS Word.

Hours of work 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m and 4:30 p.m. This position is eligible for hybrid and flexible work arrangement options (as per current corporate policy).

The city is a single-tier municipality governed by a mayor-council system. The structure of the municipal government is stipulated by the Ontario Municipal Act of 2001. There are currently 12 councillors and a mayor, with two councillors representing each of the six wards. The mayor and members of the city council serve four-year terms without term limits, with the next election scheduled for October 2022. Prior to the 2006 election, the mayor and city councillors served three-year terms.
