Qualifications

ISSIP REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit, Métis).

  • Must be registered at the University of Manitoba as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in both terms (Fall 2025 and Winter 2026). Students must have a minimum 60% course load (at least 9 credit hours per term for undergraduate students).

EDUCATION:

  • Students nearing completion of their undergraduate degree preferred.

  • Students should have knowledge and interest in water rights, climate justice, Indigenous Studies and/or Human Rights.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience in conducting literature searches on issues related to water justice.

  • Experience drafting reports, popular articles, and other written documents.

  • Experience managing and completing projects independently.

  • Experience organizing and hosting events and meetings (virtual and in-person) is an asset.

  • Due to the focus on curriculum development, experience working with young people in an educational context is an asset.

SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team is essential.
  • Enthusiasm and interest in Indigenous rights and human rights is essential.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required. Ability to write clearly and concisely. - Must have experience using computer software related to word processing and data management (e.g., Microsoft Office, Reference Management System, Zotero, Zoom).
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work independently.

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities:

Research:

  • Literature reviews on issues of water justice, climate justice, Indigenous research methodologies, and/or water governance.

  • Developing engaging, well-designed and relevant presentations on issues of water justice, climate justice, Indigenous water governance, and water rights issues. Primary audience will be middle and high school students.

  • Match learning objectives from Manitoba Education and Early Childhood Learning curricula to presentation content.

  • Developing research briefs and guides on pertinent human rights and social justice issues.

Communications and Web:

  • Developing content to profile the work of the "Just Waters" initiative to a wide range of audiences. - Assisting CHRR in the development of new web content.

  • Sharing CHRR events and work through social media and other promotional strategies.

Administrative and Project Management:

  • Administrative tasks such as organizing team meetings; taking meeting minutes and distributing to attendees, sorting and maintaining files, data entry, other clerical duties.
  • Assist in event planning (both virtual and in-person) for on campus and community-based events. - Assist in the development of Just Waters- Water Rights Speakers Bureau protocols and processes.
  • Fulfilling other duties as assigned.
