About the role

LABOURER - CASUAL

There are two positions available for Casual Labourers at Facilities. All applications must be completed online via the website and will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the postion is filled.

Reporting to the Operation Manager and Working Lead, this position is responsible for the repair and maintenance of School District grounds and facilities.

Hours of Work: As needed

Duties to Commence: On an as needed basis

Work Year Base: Twelve (12) months per year

Commencing Salary: $26.63/hr.

Duties to be assigned include:

  • Repairs, replaces and maintains; fences, playground equipment, grounds, driveways, sidewalks, parking lots and other District facilities. Delivers furniture, equipment, materials and supplies as required by;

    • Following work orders assigned by Supervisor(s)
    • Responding to emergency telephone requests (including clean up of broken glass, leaking water, and removal of dead animals)
  • Organizes work day under the direction of the Supervisor(s) by location, priority, work site availability (contacts trades and district staff to ensure the work site is ready).

  • Safely operates grounds maintenance equipment such as tractors with attachments, small to large sized mowers, flat deck truck and trailer, bobcat and loader, and other equipment.

  • Assists trades as required and directed by Supervisor(s)

  • Oversees the work of one or more helpers as assigned.

  • Follows proper safety rules and standards by ensuring the worksite is safe and secure, that equipment and vehicles are operated according to set standards.

  • Ensure the safe handling of hazardous materials (WHMIS) and the safe use and operation of equipment and hand tools.

  • Informs the Supervisor(s) and/or site Administrative Officer(s) of vandalized equipment or property.

  • Performs other job related duties as directed by Operations Manager or Working Lead.

Qualifications and Attributes:

  • Grade 10 or equivalency
  • 1 year experience in grounds and building maintenance is preferred
  • Class 5 driver's licence
  • Acceptable driver's abstract
  • Heavy Trailer endorsement or willingness to complete within the probationary period
  • Able to perform physically demanding tasks
  • Ability to work independently and set priorities
  • W.H.M.I.S. Certificate and other online safety training provided by the District to be completed within the probationary period
  • Other applicable safety training and/or certifications as provided by the District to be completed as needed
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to be an integral part of a team
  • Must be well organized
  • Must be able to pass a Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Search conducted by the District prior to starting employment
