Accelerated Anaesthesia Assistant Program Sponsorship - Three (3) Opportunities

DEPARTMENT:

Operating Room

CONDITIONS:

Full-Time for 28 weeks

HOURS:

Approximately 75 Bi-weekly Hours

SHIFTS:

Days / Evenings / Weekends, 7.5 hours per shift (subject to change)

Weekend shifts are in the Ottawa East region for the Kingston lab.

WAGE RANGE:

$42.16/hr ( Minimum) to  $51.98/hr  (Maximum)

PROGRAM INFORMATION:

Queensway Carleton Hospital is offering to sponsor candidates who are interested in completing an accelerated accredited Anaesthesia Assistant Program with Mohawk College. The course will be starting in January 2026.  The sponsorship opportunity includes fully funded tuition. The program will commence in January 2026 with an anticipated completion  by July 2026.

The accelerated anaesthesia assistant program is a 28-week  full-time  training opportunity.  Learners will complete a 14-week remote online education program provided by Mohawk College. Learners will be required to attend two in-person skills weekends at designated hospital(s) in the Ottawa/Kingston region. After completion of the online components and passing of the program exam, learners will then complete a 14-week clinical practicum at both the Queensway Carleton Hospital and possibly other regional hospitals. The candidate must attend all required program education hours and will receive additional hospital working hours, as needed, to ensure full-time hours during the Program

Upon completing the training, you will be eligible to write the CRST certification exam. A pass is required in order to obtain the certification. Please note currently the program is only offered in English

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Anaesthesia Assistant assists in the Anaesthesiologist in the delivery of general and regional anaesthesia for elective/emergent surgery patients
  • In addition to providing technical support to the anaesthesiologist for complex anaesthesia equipment, the AA administers medications, performs activities such as the provision of conscious sedation and is responsible for the insertion of intravenous and management of arterial lines
  • The AA provides constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anaesthesia using medical directives as applicable
  • Demonstrate QCH values: collaboration, accountability, innovation, respect

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate of a Respiratory Therapy Ontario College Advanced Diploma from an accredited Ontario college required
  • Certificate as a member of the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario (CRTO) and/or Proof of professional licensure as an RRT Canada (CSRT)
  • A minimum of 2,000 hours of work experience within the last three years as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) while practicing in critical care areas such as ICU, NICU, PACU, ER.
  • CPR and ACLS Certification
  • Experience in arterial line monitoring, IV insertion, hemodynamic monitoring and assisting in intubation.
  • Demonstrate a high level of maturity, independence, initiative and self-motivation
  • Strong interpersonal skills with proven ability to function effectively in a multi-disciplinary team setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Current mask fit test
  • Bilingualism is considered an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to:
  • Integrate and apply critical thinking skills to patient care
  • Handle stressful environments in a positive manner
  • Function independently and as a part of the multidisciplinary team
